Who were Elizabeth Marshall's (c1790-1862) parents?

Elizabeth Marshall married Thomas Puryear on May 13, 1803, and has always been reported to be a younger daughter of Col. William Marshall and Lucy Goode of Virginia. My family lists her as the connection to Thomas Jefferson since her maternal grandmother was Martha Jefferson, Peter Jefferson's sister, and President Thomas Jefferson's paternal Aunt. So far as far as historical evidence of her parentage, I only have one reference, from a book called "Southside Virginia Genealogies" authored by John W Pritchett and published by Genealogical Publishing Co, inc, and available in several libraries. Is anyone familiar with this family and Elizabeth in particular I would be most grateful! She is listed on WikiTree as Marshall-17954 and I am still pursuing leads including with her profile manager, but mine is the only comment thus far!

Have you checked Kentucky probate records for a possible will for her father in 1810? FamilySearch has probate records, but most are not indexed or searchable, so it may be a slow slog, but worth it.

Thanks! I did get a taste of that. Pretty intimidating reading that stuff. Helps that you told me that’s how it goes! If he left out I guess that’s a dead end. Still this is fun stuff!

Hi, Francis,

Here you go. William Marshall died intestate (he didn’t leave a will), but he did have a considerable estate. The administrator was a Bennett Marshall. This link will take you to the appraisement. See this page (image 46) and the next two (images 47-48) for debts due the estate. Looks like he may have had land and investments in Virginia, too, so you might want to check there. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GPQM-9NCC?i=45&wc=37RY-6TR%3A173388401%2C174284901&cc=1875188

BTW, There is nearly always a volume in the list for any county’s probate records that will say “Index”. Always check that first (they’re in alphabetical order by last name), and that will tell what volume and folio (page number) to go to.

She also has a duplicate profile that should be merged. If you need help with initiating a merge, just ask.

Thank you for both of those tips I will get on it! I will propose a merge!!!!!
Thank you I will check them out!!
