New member introducing myself

Hello everyone, I am Donna Dehar and I am trying to find information of one of my ancestors.  We do not know his name but I do have the name of the person he travelled with to New Zealand in the early to mid1800's.  We have been told that the pair were sent from Australia to New Zealand to track a Maori Rebel called Te Rauparaha. Both men were then left to fend for themselves in Hastings, New Zealand.  One settled in Nuhaka, Wairoa and his name was Edward (Black Ned) Tomlins.  The other person was my Great Great Grandfather who was given the name Ropata Te Waha.  I cannot seem to find any information on Ropata and am hoping someone here will have some info or point me in the right direction.  Thank you.

Hi Donna, welcome to WikiTree, you might want to add the tag New_Zealand to your post, to get the attention of the New Zealand members.

Thank you for that, I will do that now, if I can find how to lol.smiley

Heya, Donna, the tag for New Zealand is new_zealand (case doesn't matter when you add it, as it will default to lower case once saved).

The underscore, however, is a necessity.

Welcome Donna,

You will find this community to be supportive & very willing to offer their time to assist where they can.

I see now that you've worked out how to tag your message; that just flags the message to others in the community that are also working in the New Zealand, Australia, Omahu & Hastings topics.

The time frame that these men were tracking Rauparaha could well be during the time of the Maori Wars. After the Australian Eureka Stockade Rebellion was put down 1854, parts of the 2x Military regiments used, were then relocated to New Zealand to subjugate the Maori Nation(s). So you might find so help if anybody is working on those Maori Wars too.
