He was a son of Sir Thomas Wale († 1313), squire of Eydon in Northamptonshire, from his second marriage to Lucia († 1343), heiress to Henry de Pinkney. His father's estate passed to his half-brother Richard, from his father's first marriage. Thomas inherited the estate of Weedon Pinkney in Northamptonshire from his mother in 1343.
