Back about 2010 I was contacted by someone named Ray Sewell with further info re my mother's BLACK family. That info indicated the following:

Notes-from-Ray-Sewell:

•Jemima Paull Kemp was born on 10 February 1871 at Slains, Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, father James Kemp not named on Birth cert.

•As of 26 December 1894, Jemima Paull Kemp lived at Kebbaty House, Minmar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

•She married Alexander Black, son of Alexander Black and Jane Tough, on 26 December 1894 at Cafe Building, Shiprow, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Family: Alexander Black b. c 1863

i.Mary Kemp Black b. 17 Dec 1891

ii.Alexander Black b. 28 Apr 1897

iii.Jane Ann Tough Paull Black b. 28 Jan 1899

iv.George Shepard Black+ b. 22 Feb 1901

I have been adding my family tree into WikiTree and trying where possible to provide citations without cost of buying images and have run into a dilemma with the of profile Kemp-10099.

Could someone pleas look at this profile and my research notes and suggest if there is a better conclusion?

I think Ray Sewell is correct that a Jemima  Kemp Paull was born 10 Feb 1871 but he wasn't right on  two points. Firstly, her parents were unmarried. At birth ,she took her mothers surname( Paull) with with her fathers name (Kemp).as a given name.   Secondly, birthplace; this appears to be Alford.  There is a paternity suit between an Ann Paull and a James Kemp  for a child born 1871 (need to pay to see more details). On censuses, her surname appears as Kemp.

In the 1871 census Jemima was in Alford with her grandmother, mother and other assorted relatives.

In 1881 she is with her paternal grandparents and father in 1881

In 1901 a Jemima Black born Alford is with husband Alexander, and children Mary, Alexander, Jane TP.  George S.Her age on the transcript is  stated as 20. She should be 30: you'd need to see the original image (Scotland's people) to check. It is most probably a mistranscript as they  (they have a 10 year old daughter).

This appears to be her mother's paternity claim.

Thank you Helen.  I think you are right and I will correct what I've already entered into WikiTree.  I have never been able to figure out how to use Family Search and rely solely on Scotlandspeople indices and FreeCen.  I am a senior living on  a non-indexed pension from 1997 and so curtail my spending as much as possible.  Anyhow, I've now encountered another issue with this family while trying to provide citations for their 4 children.  The first according to Ray Sewell was named Mary Kemp BLACK [Black-20983] born 17 Dec 1891 in Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 3 years before Alexander & Jemima married.  I was unable to find a birth registration for a Mary Kemp Black, but I did find a Mary Black Kemp born 1891 in Alford and I believe they are one and the same. So, I have used KEMP as her Last Name at Birth. However, from that point on she seems to have been named Mary Kemp Black. Should BLACK be Current Last Name until determined if she married?  Should Black also be reported as Other Last Name(s)?

Hi Helen.  I have edited Jane Paull KEMP's profile with your research info but I am unhappy with how her profile name now appears.  Should I have completed the 7 possible entries for name differently?  Also, even though the Scotlandspeople birth registration spells her last name at birth as PAUL, I have chosen to treat it as a typo and have used PAULL instead.  Am I correct?
Re second  comment .I've changed the middle name to  Kemp as on the birth index. Is that better? You can revert it if you think it's not right.

I also find family search hard to use..It used to be better but even when I know exactly what I'm looking for, I don't always find it. I have an Ancestry sub and it works for me because they have images of records from the areas I usually work in. (no Scottish ancestors)

The problem with indexes is twofold. Firstly you have to hope the transcripts are accurate. Secondly the indexes don't  always include all the information in the original. I agree that the index record  you found for Mary Black Kemp sounds right. This is where an image would be invaluable. I wonder if the original calls her  illegitimate or her mother a single woman.

It's worth asking your question about Mary's name in another question. I would call her Mary Black Kemp at birth with an AKA Black  but I don't know if that is 'right'.
Thank you Helen.  I think given the cercumstances, that is the best that can be achieved.
