FamilySearch - How to find actual probate record when index is found?

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how to find the actual probate record for an ancestor.  I've found an index card reference, but I'm unable to decipher what it means or how to locate the actual probate record.

The collection:

New York, Queens County Probate Records, 1785-1950

https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index?owc=https://www.familysearch.org/service/cds/recapi/collections/1916211/waypoints

The index card:

Wilson, Benjamin

(AD)

1-5-1848

Recorded in L.H P.7

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9TC8-9WKY?i=1101&wc=SK99-RMS%3A950481001&cc=1916211

I was thinking "P.7" means page 7, but I don't know what the "L.H" part means.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I am not familiar with the New York probate files, however, this is what I did …

  1. I went to the family search catalog and searched for New York, Queens County and got lots of topics
  2. Scrolled to Probate and there are 33 entries.
  3. Went back to the image on your posting and noticed “AD”, which I assumed meant administration.
  4. Went back to the catalog search results, and clicked on the link for administrations (there was only one)
  5. Of the resulting list (which is long!) I scrolled to “administrations” that included the date on your image. I assumed the entries are in chronological order.
  6. I jumped to the approximate middle of the film, looked at the date of the nearest record, and just scrolled until I came to yours.
  7. Your record is at image 253.
  8. Citation:

"New York, Queens County Probate Records, 1785-1950," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9TC8-9C3Y?cc=1916211&wc=SK99-BZ3%3A203053001 : 21 May 2014), Administrations 1846 Jan-1849 Oct > image 253 of 500; Surrogate's Court, Jamaica, New York.

Edit

For some strange reason FamilySearch is telling me to sign in when I try to go to the next image, which I am, I just clicked OK, and the image advances.

After a bit more research …

At Ancestry doing a search for Benjamin Wilson (there are quite a number of Benjamin Wilson’s) brings up the Letter of Administration, which is filed differently than the documents at FamilySearch, but is what the index card refers to. I think the actual citation is Liber H, page 7. Liber means volume.

Hi George,

Many thanks to you for your reply on how you deciphered / found the actual probate record.  I really appreciate your help!

I guess I was too focused on the "Recorded in" part and didn't pay attention to the (AD) above the date and what that meant.

I've learned something new today!

Thanks again,

Gary

Thank you for the Star! I’m glad I could help.

Perhaps L.H indicates the book it's recorded in?
