New app: Missing Parents

Some people have already seen this, and I've kind of replicated Jamie's Missing Links app without realising it, but... This is a little different, and I think I'm finished with it now, so here is a new Missing Parents app.

This app finds the ancestors of you and your cousins (or anyone else and their cousins) (up to fourth cousins) who have a parent (or two) missing. It also suggests people who may be missing a spouse or child.  The results are in a sortable table, with Connection Finder and Relationship Finder links as well as a house/home icon, which will show a list of each person's family members (any parents, siblings, spouses, and children) with dates and locations. There are more details if you click the '?' in the top-right-hand corner of the page. I hope some people find it useful.

While I'm here, I have a small WikiTree BEE update, somewhat related to this app, as it also helps to find missing connections.  On the 'My Connections' page, the BEE will give you a table with a count of your connections on the page.  For each degree, there's a 'Missing Connections' button which will look for those on the list with missing parents and possible missing spouses.  There's also a table button for each degree to organise the results into a sortable table (also with the home icon to show each person's family members).  The My Connections page maxes out at 1000 results or a certain number of degrees, but the BEE will keep going.  Once you max out, the BEE will find the rest of the people in that degree and enable the button to fetch the next degree. When degree 7 completes, the BEE will give you some text to add your Connection Count at 7 degrees (CC7) to the table on Tommy Buch's CC7 page.

And while I'm still here, I'll say a quick public 'thank you' to Tommy for his huge help with both of these things above. Thanks again, Tommy. yessmiley

If anyone sees any problems, please let me know (preferably privately). Thanks.

Thanks Ian and Tommy!!  It is very helpful for anyone planning on doing the Connect a Thon, if you want to add to your ancestors.

Thanks for saying so, Linda. smiley  I thought the same thing (this could be useful for people working on their ancestors in the Connect-a-Thon).  It's good to have a different way to look at things.

This is great, Ian! Another terrific contribution to our community. It's amazing how prolific and creative you are.

I like that the columns are sortable. Sorting by birthdate makes it easy for me to spot the low-hanging fruit.

Is it possible to pass a starting person's ID through a URL parameter to automatically initiate a search?

Glad you like it. smiley

Yes, there's one URL parameter to start it: id. For example, https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/beacall6/missing_parents.php?id=Beacall-6 .

Perfect. Thanks, Ian.

Hello, Ian, and thank you for this wonderful way to display this information! I’ve certainly goy TONS of leads for Connectathon! In thinking or that, and the 7 degrees metric, an additional column listing the degreee of separation would be helpful to more efficiently work systematically from closest to more distant relatives, particularly if it could be sortable.

Again, thank you for all you do!

One other feature I really appreciate is seeing the ‘terminal” grandparents in generation order. For me, at least, I’ve never thought  of these in quite this way! Brilliant!

Thanks, Deb.  I've added a degrees column.  Please let me know if you see any problems with it.

Wonderful, Ian!

I think this will be a big time-saver! I will look at it tomorrow, since I've got an early day tomorrow and my sleep is calling. I've already added the link to my "WikiTools" bookmark folder! Thank you for all you do!

My parents are shown in my tree. I'm not sure why I got this item about finding missing parents, though I am trying to find the missing father of my great-grandfather, Carl Henrik Lind.

Ian, thanks for all the work you do.

BEE was instrumental in allowing me to get over 10,000 connections.  The "Missing Connections" on the My Connection page was a key feature.

A hint for others trying to improve their counts, work in sections of your tree.  Use the 2nd or 3rd connections as the roots of subsequent connection searches.  Then work your way out a level at a time from there.  I was able to add over 100 connections a day using this method without loosing track of what I was doing.  With BEE, the maximum connections can be increased but this is a slow process.  Working through sections of your tree as I described is very fast as you're always inside the 1000 connection range.

You're welcome. smiley
