Asa Travis Information

I do not know if this will help but in my collection I have a hatchet head that has a very old note attached to it that says "This hatchet was made by Asa Travis in 1792." On the back of the note there is a recent note that says "Born 1767 Warren County, GA." I found the hatchet head and note in the burned ruins of my family's plantation home in Mayfield, Georgia. Mayfield is about 10-15 miles from Warrenton in Warren County. This appears confusing to me because Warren county was not established until about 1792 and Warrenton in about 1798. Cy Stapleton

I believe that I have online photos of that hatchet.  Pre-last recession I was writing with I assume your wife but I lost the letters.  I have tried to find her contact information for years.  I am assuming that it is Mr. Stapleton who is the owner of the hatchet.  The picture is online at: http://onetravisfamily.info/showmedia.php?mediaID=753&medialinkID=2302

Please contact me Mr. Stapleton.  As I recall the speculation was that the family had traveled down from the Texas area.  Unfortunately, as I wrote earlier I could not continue the letters because of my circumstances at that time.  Please contact me.

What became Warren county, was formerly in 1790 part of Wilkes and Richmond counties in GA. From "Map Guide to the US Federal Censuses, 1790-1920" by Thorndale and Dollarhide, page 79.
