Am I chasing a false assumption?

On AncestryDNA I have two matches at mid-20s cM range. These matches somehow are connected to my paternal side.Sadly one has no tree at all and the other has a tree with only 6 ancestors in it. It lists two potential connections because of close spelling to surnames in my family tree. Both of these leads stem from two of my paternal maternal paternal 2nd great-grandparents daughters who married men with these surnames of Maurer and Kaiser. Location doesn't eliminate either line. I am working on one line to either confirm a connection or eliminate it.

My great-grandaunt Rosa Wilhelmina Knoebel married Peter Reinhard Maurer. Reinhardt is a surname of one of the matches. I have always wonder two things about Peter Reinhard Maurer (1847-1895)

1. If he was somehow related to my 3rd great-grandmother Regina Maurer (1795 - 1868)  Maurer-328?

Both were born in Istein, Baden, Germany

2. If his middle name Reinhard possibly was the surname of one of his ancestors?

Here is what I know but have not been able to confirm with a second source.

On Peter Reinhard Maurer and Rosa W. Knoebel Milwaukee, Wisconsin marriage registration of June 1874  it lists his parents names as Peter Maurer and Anna Maria Maurer. It lists his birth place as Istein, Baden, Germany. The German Birth & Baptism index 1558-1898 on Ancestry lists a Catholic baptism and lists his parents as Peter Maurer and Anna Maria Grethen (again having not seen the actual record this is not confirmed). Beyond this I have no other information.

Regina Maurer Braendlin - the information I have for her from a translation of the Catholic marriage record in October 1822 lists her parents as Johann Georg Maurer (deceased) Maurer- 1786 from Istein and Salmomaa Schoor (deceased) Schoor-19 of Huttingen.

Only one remark. We don't have middle names in Germany. It is a second given name.

You can find your ancestor's birth record here:

Peter Richard Maurer

Born in Istein on September 20, 1847 to Peter Maurer, a shoemaker, and Anna Maria Geither ?.

And his parents marriage record:

Peter Meinrad ? Maurer & Anna Maria Geether ?

The son of Alois Maurer (deceased) and Solomea ? Müller (alive), born April 8, 1815 ? in Istein, got married to the daughter of Johann Geether ? and Maria ...ger ?, born May 22, 1819 in Schlechtenhaus [Schlächtenhaus] on April 23, 1846.

Peter Meinrad Maurer

Born in Istein on April 8, 1815 to Aloys Maurer, a vintner or vineyard worker ("Rebmann"), and Salome née Müller.

Anna Maria Grather ?

Born in Weitenau on May 22, 1819 to Johannes Grather ? and Maria Gselliger ?.

Apologies for the many question marks and different spellings. Have a go yourself. Here's a genealogy page on Istein (in German):

Istein

"Digitalisate" takes you to scans of the birth, marriage, and death records.

----------------------------------------

One more edit. Indexed family registers (Ortsfamilienbuch, or OFB for short) are available for Weitenau and Wieslet, which are close by Schlächtenau:

OFB

Click "Gesamtliste der Familiennamen" to enter. Then look for Grether and Geselliger.

PS:

Sebastian Brändlin & Regina Maurer

The groom born January 19, 1797 to Johannes Brändlin from Istein and Salome Schörl ? from Istein. The bride born September 27, 1795 to Johann Georg Maurer from Istein (deceased) and Salome Schoor from Huttingen. The wedding took place on October 28, 1822.

----------------------------------------

With a little luck, you might be able to find the marriage record of Aloys Maurer and Salome Müller. The earliest records for which scans are online are from 1811. Then you will know whether or not Aloys was Regina's brother. Spoiler:

Aloys Maurer & Salome Müller
