Biobuilders April 2022 - People whose surname is an Occupation

This month’s Bio Builders Challenge theme is People whose surname is an Occupation, for example Taylor, Weaver, Farmer, etc.

You are not limited to profiles on your Watchlist.

Thank you for your support.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • names of children, if any
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • Some list siblings. (I think this takes up real estate.)
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

Here is a huge list of surnames derived from occupations. Some, like Hawker and Brewster, surprised me.

https://localhistories.org/the-origin-of-surnames/
very interesting, but I was surprised to see Wright wasn't listed at all. I'm doing my family of Micklewrights - supposed to mean someone who made special or quality tools.

Three bakers is all I have this time.

Since all I have on my watchlist are Bakers and not much to be said on most of them, I adopted a Weaver :)  and a perk to that is it came with a book source for SD that I found a Google Books link for and hope to find some of my SD relations in those pages.

  1. George Baker
  2. William Baker
  3. Mary Jane Baker
  4. Archibald Weaver

I have far more than I thought: All connected, all sourced some not as well as they could be, many genealogically defined, I'll check who needs work.

Barber, Butler, Cooke, Hateley but not Hatter, Hunter, Knight, Major

Millerchip but no Millers, Mason, Morris maybe for Morris dancers

Parsons, Porter, Pypers not Pipers, Sargent, Smith

Sheperd and Shepherd, Turner, Taylor and Wright

But You are a "driver".
Smith definitely, I would bet Herriman as well
This was a joke, folks, based on my surname.

Guess I should have caught on with the “Gee.”
There was a smiley too.

I've done  couple of these before and they're fun. This one  intrigues me. I have Falconer, Cooper, Wright, Waterer, not to mention a whole lot of Gardners and Wagoners and Shepherds.

Here's my question: Do we keep a running tally, added to past totals? How does anybody know?
by Sue Townsend G2G6 Mach 2 (25.7k points)
Bob has a spreadsheet for the running tally's so no worries he keeps track but you can to on your own spreadsheet for reference.

Just make sure you do a numbered list here as this saves Bob having to count all of them :)

Got most of em now, if they don't get un-linked again. Might finish them after all. Some of them were already on Wiki, so I can just add bits. Sources are next.
