I may have found a lead. I searched under "Wilkerson, Newton" and came back with a hit on the Missouri SoS Soldiers and Sailors Database. https://s1.sos.mo.gov/records/archives/archivesdb/soldiers/Detail.aspx?id=S334782&conflict=Civil%20War
This was the same period that the bushwackers and Bill Anderson were running amok in N. Missouri. I saw an announcement from the MO Sec of War offering a $300 bounty for Missouri Militia Men to sign up.

The handwriting on the Service Record looks like "Wilkinson" to me, so it might have been a transcription error listing the last name spelling of Wilkerson.
