WikiTree Sourcer now available for Safari on Mac and iOS

The WikiTree Sourcer browser extension is now available for the Safari browser.

It can be found in the App Store for Mac or iPad/iPhone by searching for WikiTree Sourcer.

For those not familiar with the extension it helps with finding and citing sources on FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindMyPast, GRO and FreeBMD (more sites are planned to be supported). It has been available for most browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, Kiwi etc) for several months. Safari was the one that was harder to support but was requested by some WikiTreers.

Thanks, Rob.  I've heard great things about your extension.
Great news. Thanks for being so considerate to those of us who use Safari.
I have read and tried everything to get the wikitree sourcer to work for the iPhone, but it seems to be a no go for me.

Hi Mary,

I'm happy to work with you to debug what is happening on your iPhone. It may just be that web extensions are confusing to use on the iPhone version of Safari.

Here are the steps to use it. Perhaps you could tell me at which point it fails for you:

  1. Download the app from the Apple App Store.
  2. Run the app (I'm not 100% sure if this step is required, downloading it may install the extension without this step). The app just brings up a screen saying to use the extension in Safari.
  3. In the URL bar in Safari (the field you type in to search or type a web address) there is an icon on the left which is a small A next to a big A. There can also be an icon next to it which looks like a puzzle piece. If there is just the AA then tap on that otherwise you can top on either.
  4. This brings up a menu and there should be an item that says "Manage Extensions", tap on that.
  5. This shows you a list of the installed extensions. WikiTree Sourcer should be in the list. If the switch to the right of it is not on then tap it to turn it on.
  6. Now when you tap on the AA or puzzle piece in the URL bar on any page you should see WikiTree Sourcer in the menu.
  7. Tap WikiTree Sourcer in the menu and this will bring up the WikiTree Sourcer popup menu (Safari may ask you to allow it first). This is the same menu that the "[1]" icon brings up on other platforms.
Please let me know how far you get.
Cheers,
Rob
Thank you Rob for your quick response. I deleted the app and re-downloaded it and then it showed up in my browser. Must have been a hiccup somewhere. Did a citation and seems to work fine so I’m off to fully testing it.

This changes everything, now that I’ve learned how to use it. I built an entire ancestry tree of 19k on my iPhone with pretty much nothing. Copying and pasting was maddening, lots of typos. i thought using my phone was not unusual until recently when people gasped.  I still think it’s more common than people may realize, especially now with this amazing creation. You’re def my new hero. This is heaven.  Thank you, and thank you as well [[Carruth-363|Linda Carruth]]. I never would have known if not for you.
