Connecting Challenge

In order to meet the US Black Heritage's goal of creating 50,000+ new African-American profiles in the year 2021, we have started a connecting challenge. It will be similar to the WikiTree Connect-A-Thon with a few exceptions. Please read our challenge space page for all the rules.

Who can participate? Any WikiTree member who has upgraded from guest and has signed the honor code. 

Start/End: This Challenge is a month long. We begin on the first of each month and end at midnight EST on the last day of each month. 

A participant sticker will be available to all members who join in for at least one of the months. Special stickers will be awarded to all participants who create at least 25 profiles in a month. A Winner's sticker will be given to the top contributor each month.

To Partipate:

• Read the rules please!
• Click on the "answer" button below my name on this post to declare you want to participate.
• Start with an existing profile and create a family member attached to that profile. Keep adding as many family members up, down, and sideways on the tree as you can. Each new profile is one point.
• Make sure the research is correct! Use primary documents to find and prove relationships.
• Add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of Black Americans who lived in the USA, so the project can keep track of the profiles and honor their heritage.
• Add at least one good source to every profile.
• Use the Challenge Tracker to keep track of every new profile you create for this challenge. It will count the total for you automatically. If you discover you forgot to track some, you can list them here to count.
• Repeat.
• If you are working on enslaved ancestors, every new slave profile you link to a slave owner using the USBH Project's guidelines, counts as a connected profile. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.

I'm so excited about adding more profiles! Our last count in August of new profiles was 23980 and our latest total of profiles with the African-American sticker is 43,581!

 I'm loving this growth so much! 

Thank you everyone who is planting the seeds.

The next goal will be 100,000 total profiles in 2022!

I just checked the links shared in post and I have 1 DNA connection and other connections! Thank you so much for posting! So, is it an option to help with profiles who need biographies only on this project?

I learned earlier this summer that at least one of my ancestors was a 'slaveholder'. It was a shock and as I'd never heard of this from anyone before and my parents were financially-poor (we lived within an hour of the location of the mill at one point but I never heard a word!) historically, it unfortunately, makes "sense" (ETA: in the context of "why didn't I think of the possibility growing up"!) . I know documentation and records are scarce in the south, but would like to help. (I have a new-to-me first cousin who may be interested as well. I have living relatives who have worked the census in the south and I myself know my way around having resided in the south.) Thank you.

Hi there. For this challenge, our goal is to add as many new profiles connected to African-American family as possible. What counts? 1) New African-American profiles 2) any family members attached (of any race), 3) Newly created slave profiles connected to slave owners.

The ultimate goal in adding more profiles is to help connect family to each other more quickly.

I only managed one profile in September, but have been doing an enormous amount of research. I hope to connect a LOT of profiles this month! I like to make them as complete as possible, so I'll never be a speed demon. :-)
