                  US Black Heritage Project's

Connecting Challenge

In order to meet the US Black Heritage's goal of creating 50,000+ new African-American profiles in the year 2021, we have started a connecting challenge. It will be similar to the WikiTree Connect-A-Thon with a few exceptions. Please read our challenge space page for all the rules.

Who can participate? Any WikiTree member who has upgraded from guest and has signed the honor code.

Start/End: This Challenge is a month long. We begin on the first of each month and end at midnight EST on the last day of each month.

A participant sticker will be available to all members who join in for at least one of the months. Special stickers will be awarded to all participants who create at least 25 profiles in a month. A Winner's sticker will be given to the top contributor each month.

To Partipate:

  • Read the rules please!
  • Click on the "answer" button below my name on this post to declare you want to participate.
  • Start with an existing profile and create a family member attached to that profile. Keep adding as many family members up, down, and sideways on the tree as you can. Each new profile is one point.
  • Make sure the research is correct! Use primary documents to find and prove relationships.
  • Add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of Black Americans who lived in the USA, so the project can keep track of the profiles and honor their heritage.
  • Add at least one good source to every profile.
  • Use the Challenge Tracker to keep track of every new profile you create for this challenge. It will count the total for you automatically. If you discover you forgot to track some, you can list them here to count.
  • Repeat.
  • If you are working on enslaved ancestors, every new slave profile you link to a slave owner using the USBH Project's guidelines, counts as a connected profile. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.

Have questions? Please ask.

Only have time for a few profiles? Please join us! Every contribution gets us closer to our goal.

Do you need some profiles to get you started?

If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, you should have access to the US Black Heritage Connecting Challenge channel. If you can't access it, please send me a message.

Thanks for growing our tree!

Our September total: 2246

I do not see the "answer" button but I want to partcipate.  Where exactly is the button?  Does it actually read as "Answer this post"
Hi Pat, the "answer this post" button is right above your message here on the left. However, your comment here is just fine too. Thanks for joining us!

Emma, I've got a couple of profiles I've been working on, but not sure if I'm actively involved with the challenge. Neither of them currently have the sticker, but I think they qualify. Angela Bassett and her husband Courtney B. Vance. I'm happy to add the sticker to them if you like, and anyone who wants to add to their families is more than welcome.

Just read carefully through your instructions and that of the USBH project. I'm working to add the sticker to all members of their families now.

Yes, they definitely qualify for the sticker. Thanks for all your hard work with our notables!smiley

OK - Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett should be connected tomorrow morning when the links update.

I missed you! I hope everything's okay. Glad you're back.smiley

Thanks, Emma.  Just a bit burned out.  Also developed some leg pain which the DR and PT think is due to my poor posture sitting at the computer for hours on end (imagine that!).  Main reason I skipped the source-a-thon for the first time.  But getting better. This challenge won't have me under so much pressure.
I started yoga back in April and it has helped my posture and back pain a lot. I know what you mean about sitting at the computer for hours :-)

Good to see you are back! yes

Thanks, Patty.

I'd like to participate! I've already added a few without even knowing there was a challenge. I will list them here since I didn't use the challenge tracker:

Thanks so much, Emily! smiley And thanks for listing your first ones here. I'll get them added to the spreadsheet total at the end of the month.

I think I forgot to use the challenge tracker for James Rouse.

I'd like to participate. I've done some work on upward and downward trees of some prominent Black Americans and have been wanting to share it.

Greetings, I would like to join in this month. I went to webnar on the release of Freedmen's bureau on Ancestry and started researching. I have started a database on my computer some of the info I have found so far.

by Vickie Miranda G2G6 (8.0k points)

I wonder if we were at the same webinar? I watched the one with Nicka Sewell-Smith and Crista Cowan. I'm so excited about these records now being searchable! Thanks for sharing your researchsmiley

Yep through NGS.

I want to participate! I'm just getting started on the Slave Narratives project, and there are children and spouses and parents and slave owners, so I'll take the time to create profiles where necessary and connect them to my primary subjects. Fun!
by Stacy Aannestad G2G6 Mach 1 (10.6k points)

It will be very powerful to add their family members. Thanks, Stacy!smiley

So happy to be able to do it!

I have a question. I am working on a Slave Holder list Kendrick-2936. One of the slaves name is Francis Kendrick, Kendrick-2943. I have the contract listed on her profile showing her age 13 [she would be born about 1852]. I found a census 1870 that's in the same exact area that lists a Francis at the age of 20 [would be born 1850] 2 years difference. Would I go list the 1870 census as resource even if the birth year has two difference? What is exceptable with differences in dates?

by Vickie Miranda G2G6 (8.0k points)
birth years vary greatly from document to document. I have even seen more than 10 years difference for the same person. 2 years difference is a pretty insignificant gap.

Count me in. Getting started late in the month, but that will have me ready to go for next month! Read up on it all and practiced adding some profiles today. Added 11 new profiles based upon one 1780 will. For years and years I have wanted to be able to have a way to document and share this information as I run across it.
by Linda Mearse G2G6 Mach 1 (11.1k points)

yay! I'm so excited for the profiles you'll be adding, Linda. Thank you!smiley

I know it's late in the month, but I'd like to participate in October and November. Can I include the profiles I created prior to this post in October?
by Reggie Hillmon G2G Crew (930 points)
Hi Reggie! It's never too late. If you created any in October already, all you have to do is list them here and at the end of the month, I will count them in your total on the spreadsheet. Thanks!
