Do we want so many subcategories for Canadian Provinces?

It appears that subcategories for Canadian provinices include counties, cities, and townships, leading to several hundred subcategories.  In contrast, US states are subcategorized into counties, which are subcategorized into cities and town(ship)s.  Is there some reason, that Canadian provinces don't follow the same procedures as US States?

The reason it hasn't been done so far for Canada is that not all provinces/territories are divided in that way. Eg. Category:Manitoba couldn't really be divided up any differently than it is now, because we don't have counties or anything similar.

But for Ontario and Quebec I think you're right; they do need to be divided up by county/district/etc. to make the categories more navigable.

We have townships which are equal to counties here in Ontario.  But having done research across the river in Quebec?  There have been counties. townships and other designations through-out history.

So, the short answer is yes.  If we name places as they were named at the time someone lived there we will need all those subcategories.

My 2.5 cents,

Mags
