Help us find and improve next week's Connection Finder profiles: Popular Sixties Musicians [closed]

The biopic about Aretha Franklin, Respect, is coming out in theaters on August 13th, so we're featuring her in the Connection Finder.

We're looking for profiles of other popular musicians of the 1960s to feature with her.

Here are a few of the people we're considering:

Can you help with these profiles, or expand their families? Adding relatives in any direction helps with connections. Every missing relative you add will make our connections to them closer.

Who else should we feature? Do they need a profile?

All profiles we feature need a good biography and a connection to the big tree. We also want each one to have an image, and the image needs to have proper source attribution explaining why it's in the public domain or why we have the right to display it.

We can't feature everyone mentioned (we only have room for eleven per week), but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

To help us plan future themes, see the 2021 Example Profile Plans post here.

I'll start working on Jim Morrison, fourth cousin of mine. Thanks!

first 11 here (https://top40weekly.com/top-100-artists-of-the-60s/) are probably good contenders and a decent mix, if you picked just one main name from the groups listed.

Other options, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and on and on and on...

Thanks, Jonathan. It's much more helpful if you can post the links to the WikiTree profiles for those folks. Great list, though.

I wasn't going to nominate Billy Thorpe until I'd had a look to see if I could Connect him.  He didn't even have a notables sticker before I looked -- then I adopted the profile.
He's connected.
Billy Thorpe now has a bio, a pic, parents, and is Connected, so is ready to go if selected.

Jan Johansson. Very Swedish, very sixties.

I've had Visa från Utanmyra in my head all the time while working on his connection. He's connected all through the forests of Hälsingland as is fitting.

Just gave him a portrait.

Why not narrow your focus further. I suggest kick-ass women musicians of the sixties. For example,

Ellen Naomi Cohen (1941-1974)

Eunice Kathleen (Waymon) Simone (1933-2003)

Janis Lyn Joplin (1943-1970)

Rock on!

How about Frank Zappa or Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers. Both have profiles and are connected, although Everly needs a photo.

by David Randall G2G6 Pilot (361k points)
Everly now has a primary image.

Leonard Cohen - connected, with bio & photo (though a more extensive bio could be written)

Jerry Garcia - connected; could do with an improved bio, has photo

Captain Beefheart - connected, with bio & photo

Nina Simone - NOT connected (would be nice to fix that), with bio & photo

I'm afraid I won't have much time to work on any of these profiles this week, as I did last week, so if anyone else is particularly fond of Leonard, Jerry or Nina, please consider working on a bio for the former two or connecting the latter.

A very popular dutch singer in the '60's was Mary Servaes  She sang songs in the genre "Levenslied"  Her artist name was "Zangeres zonder Naam" (= singer without a name)

She is connected, has a pic, but her profile could use some work.

Is the feature expected to include non-Anglo-Saxon singers/musicians? Asking because they will almost inevitably not be known much outside of their own country, and certainly not in the English-speaking world. The list Jonathan links above is all Anglo-saxon.

In any case, there are a few profiles for popular French singers who were active in the 1960s, but quite likely none of them would be recognizable outside of France: Johnny Hallyday, Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Berger, France Gall (the latter won the Eurovision song contest, which would tend to make her more recognizable in other European countries).

Yep, absolutely! Thanks, Isabelle.
Oh, Eurovision theme would be fun sometime! I'll have to put that on my list.
My grandfather used to love some French singer. I hope it was France Gall. I just don't remember. I think the woman's hair was more brown though. So my grandmother was playing the Beatles, Englebert Humperdinck, and the Platters and my grandfather a French woman. Great memories!

Françoise Hardy, perhaps? We didn't have that many female singers until the 1980s, and she's perhaps the best known 1960s one who was not blonde.
