It's mostly explained in the linked profile, any other questions please just ask .. Oh and there is no hurry at all the puzzle has been around for 10+ years laugh

death record in Ancestry - died in coal mining accident - Bent Colliery, Lanark
Thx. who's that for, is it father  Donald ? Lanark is not near Dunfermline/Fife, it usually comes under Glasgow

Do you have more details? I know he said his father was a Gunsmith but I also know that "Dad" may have to take whatever work was available so thanks for taking the time to look!
Following on from Eddie's find above...

The Scottish Mining Accident site might help

Have you ruled out the John Campbell who was baptised 27 Feb 1828 at Kilbrandon and Kilchattan? His parents were Duncan Campbell and Jean McPherson.  (ScotlandsPeople)

so many Duncan/Donald Campbells and Jean/Janet/Jane McPherson's without even going to Argyll cool. though I do now suspect John is an "orphan" of that era and also suspect it will never actually be provable either way. Unless I happen to get to Dunfermline records office one day and that is indeed where he did come from (they apparently  have many non-digitised records available)

I suspect he may have been an older child of a family that did indeed migrate from Argyll to the Central belt before emigration but that he was likely already working and chose his own path, but maybe that's romanticizing

the other is that he could have been a "bad lad" and was cut off early doors

either way he worked hard and raised a good family LOL

Thanks for all the suggestions, they are much appreciated x
