Welcome to WikiTree, Philip.

I guess you assume that a person needs to know what you are talking about in order to answer (and that may be true), but it would help if you could edit your question to include information about the place and time you are asking about.  It also helps to use tags (examples: england, yorkshire, new_zealand, potts) to get the attention of people who might know about the subject of your comment.

Mrs Potts was the widow of ,I think Thomas Potts who died in around 1800. It seems he had been a successful business man in Edinburgh and left a generous estate.  When his wisow died some years later, all hi male relatives had predeceased him asn she did not wish the money to go directly to the spouses of his surviving siblings so she left it in trust to their descendants in equal portions - three families in which each generation inherited the income shared equally.  After one and a half centuries, the beneficiaries had multiplied to the extent that the cost of administration was greater than the disbursement of  benefit.  It took around 20 years to wind up the trust and distribute the remaining capital, which was completed in about 1950.  The interest is that the names of the families are in the document which can assist in identifying the correct spouses!

Did you know that the following countries have an 'Edinburgh':

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • United States
  • Scotland

Which one are you interested in? ;)

Scotland

I think you mean Thomas Potts whose will was confirmed in Edinburgh in 1804:

Potts

Thomas

27/6/1804

merchant in Edinburgh

TT

Edinburgh Commissary Court

CC8/8/135

His widow, Isabella Aitkenson, died around 1826 and her will was confirmed in March 1826:

Potts

Isabella

6/3/1826

alias Aitkenson, widow of Thomas Potts, Merchant & Grocer in Bristo Street of Edinburgh

Inventory ; Trust Disposition ; Settlement

Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventories

SC70/1/34

You can download both of these from ScotlandsPeople for a small fee.

The winding up of the trust might be what is referred to on page 3 of the Glasgow Herald for 15 March 1879 which you can read for free at https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC&dat=18790315&printsec=frontpage&hl=en

Many thanks.  I tried to search for this and became completely bogged down!  My grandfather was the last of our family to receive a benefit and had correspondence with the trustees re winding up.  I had a copy of the documents which have unfortunately been misplaced.

I had the names of the persons correctly but wanted confirmation that I was correct - and could find no death certificate for Isabella. Perhaps because I thought she had died a decade earlier!
