Which name is correct Edward Somerset or Edward Beaufort-Somerset? I can not find where the Beaufort was given as part of last name.

No, Somerset should be the last name. Beaufort was the title given to the dukedom. They chose it for their title name because it used to be a last name of past ancestors, but it died out about a century before. I just haven't been able to convince people in the US that there is a difference.  If you can good luck, Dawn Griffis

It is a bit confusing, they went from being the Beaufort family, Dukes of Somerset, to the Somerset family, eventually Dukes of Beaufort via an illegitimate son of the last Duke of Somerset.

Technically they are still of the House of Beaufort, BUT Dawn is correct the family name is Somerset and the LNAB should be Somerset.
I have never heard of the Duke of Somerset- where did you get that from?

I believe when Beaufort was a last name it came from the illegitimate children of John of Guant & Katherine Swineford - who he later married. He then legalized the children, thereby giving them the last name of Beaufort- (back then people were just picking a last name) not a title - several of the Herbert/Somerset/ Raglan descendants came from that line. But back then it was not a title. Americans seem to have a hard time comprehending the way it works.

Dawn
you are right about the Duke of Somerset- and the fact it went around a couple of families. I remembered after I had written, it was one of those the king kept giving & then taking it away for another family. I hang my ghead in shame.

Dawn
Dawn, thank you, for straightening this out.  You can hold your head up, no shame. Thank you, John for your contribution.  I appreciate both of your imputs.

Kenneth
Thanks Kenneth & John,

So can the record be corrected?

Dawn
There hasn't been anyone else putting forward a view that the name should stay as Beaufort-Somerset, so we should be able to change the name.

Dawn, you and Ken are the Profile Managers for Edward Beaufort-Somerset, so one of you can change the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) and the Curent Last Name (CLN) to Somerset.

Dawn you also seem to be the manager for two other profiles with this double-barrelled surname

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Beaufort-Somerset-4

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Beaufort-Somerset-5

So you can edit their LNAB to Somerset as well.
John, I have tried to edit the name to Somerset but all that keeps coming up is a questionaire for me to complete, that I have done. The other 2 with the same last name is because of the first one- none of which did I put in. So maybe Ken can do it.

I sometimes feel these trees have a mind of their own!

Dawn
Dawn and John,

I corrected the last name (LNAB) removed Beaufort.

Thank you again.

Kenneth
Thank you Kenneth,

Dawn
Thank you Kenneth.

Dawn I think the questionnaire you came across is the pre-1700 questionnaire and you need that to make any changes to any pre-1700 profiles.

If you like I can add myself as a manager to the other two profiles and change the name?
Kenneth, I answered the questionaire, but each time I go to a new one to edit the questionaire is there again- frustrating. Yes please make yourself manager & make the necessary changes. Wish you could do the same thing for Anne Burfort John Ragland's wife everyone still insists in saying her last name is Beaufort - again VERY WRONG!
Dawn,  it may take 24 hours( or you may have to refresh your browser) for  the 1700 centification badge to show up.  Not to worry, it will happen.  John, go ahead and take care of any corrections on the other profiles.  And again, thanks to the both of you for your help in straightening this out .

Kenneth
