What you have done is simply edit the data fields. That's not what merging is. Merging is actually taking two separate ID#s and making them one - not getting confused over who is which in the text or data fields. (Which can be easy to do.)
If you have an error in the data, just change it as you have done.
If Rachel was the mother of Sarah, and the wife of William, you're not doing so badly.
