Are you related to President George Washington?

Question

I have discovered I am 11th cousin 6 times removed to George Washington, 1st President of the USA through my father and trough my mother I am his second great uncle's third cousin's wife's third great uncle.

Surprisingly, another relative Col. Peter Willats was on the British side fighting the French, Spanish and colonists. 

I know this is a question many of you will love to answer.

Hi Daniel,

I don't think I or the the posters are stating or implying that. Being related to George Washington by blood directly and proving it would be amazing. Being "connected" might be a better word for some people to understand. Just like others on this page I am not proving or implying being either a direct descendant or DNA relative. I think the point is just to have a little fun. It is interesting to see the potential, even unproven relationships, using the Wikitree relationship finder.

The relationship finder tool will only show a "common ancestor" often with someone famous many generations ago. This is not a tool to "prove" a bloodline. I think people misunderstand that the "relationship finder tool" was built in to have a bit of fun and show the "potential" of building a single world tree.

George is my 9th cousin's great grandson, a direct blood relation . John Washington Born 1346 in Lancashire England is my direct ancestor. I am not American but English born and live in Australia. I am more distantly  related to John Adams.

This is an old post but I found out I am 5th cousin 7 times removed to George Washington. I also found that I am 1st cousin 7x removed to Debra Read wife of Benjamin Franklin. He was good friends of Dr. Joshua Babcock who is my 6x great grand father. I assume that Debra and Ben introduced her cousin Thankful to him. Which means if not for Ben Franklin I wouldn’t exist.

I also show that I am 2nd cousins 9 times removed on my paternal grandmother's side. Connected by Colonel Augustine Warner and Mildred Reade down to Mildred Warner. On my dad's side there were numerous ancestors named Mildred "Millie" and settled in Washington, County, Arkansas, named after George Washington.

Yes. My great grandmother hired a genealogist before she passed away. She gave my sister and I a copy of what was provided to her. It had to have been 30-50 pages front and back of details regarding our family relationship to George Washington and his father. My sister and I are the 13th generation 7 times removed relatives.

President George Washington, POTUS 1, is my 6th Great Uncle. I am related via his brother John Augustine Washington. But I still have fond affection for George, in fact I keep a picture of him in my wallet. But seriously now, he is my Uncle, and the only one I can thank, outside of my mother's roots, would be DNA testing and WikiTree.

Pretty cool to have a SAR ancestor whos brother was General of the Army, and then Commander in Chief.

As a Black American descended from slaves, my connection to George Washington has been revealed by the multiple White "Washington" DNA matches that I have on Ancestry.com. Although I do not know exactly which Washington slave owner is my ancestor, based on my White Washington DNA matches, General Washington is somewhere around my 4th cousin, 7 times removed.

I am related by blood to Mary (Towneley) WARNER as well as to Col. Augustne WARNER, Sr.  Augustine was George's great great grandfather- so perhaps I'm elated lineally but I have no idea!

George Washington’s older brother is my multi times great grandfather making George Washington my multi grand uncle. George’s father of course is my multi great grandfather as is George’s paternal grandfather. George’s older brother married Anne Fairfax of Fairfax county bringing the Washington family closer to high society at the time and his brother was able to steer George into surveying which was an acceptable profession for someone in high society. George’s prospects without his older brothers assistance would not have been that notable. It was through his brother that George eventually inherited Mt Vernon after Anne Fairfax, who outlived her husband, had passed. The Washington family goes back many centuries in England. Many were people of note in their communities such as sheriffs, magistrates and the like.
