I'll look it up on Fold3.

Here's what I found on NPS:

An interesting factoid: I found an article about a bad train wreck 16 Nov 1862 in the Cleveland, TN area. It was carrying Confederate soldiers and 33rd Alabama was on board. Of the two cars that suffered the most casualties, Co. G (Daleville Blues) had the most deaths and injuries. John Clemens name was not among the casualties. 17 killed; 67 injured.
The Alabama Archives has regimental history files:

Thank you Victoria for the info. I dug into that many yrs. ago from a tip from a fellow in Tx. @ one of the universities. Thanks again !
Thanks again Victoria, I have checked twice with the Alabama Archives once back in the early 2000 and as resent as two months, again to no avail as to when or where he died at a $10 charge. But again a very very thank you !
I guess my info was as bad as Dr. Fauci's pitch. LOL. I gave it a shot.
Hi Robert. John Clemmons is my 4th great grandfather. Can I ask where you found the death date and his service details? Please add sources to the profile if possible.

The 1860 census says he was born in South Carolina. I'm guessing that the 1850 census is wrong in saying he was born in Georgia (since he was living in Georgia at the time, and that seems like a simpler error to make, but who knows).

Thanks to you and everyone else here who has helped to track down info about him!
Hi Jay and Robert. I have John M Clemens living in Dale County, Alabama in Sept. 1860. What was his father's name? The problem is the orthographic changes in the spelling of the last name. Clemens of all spelling are very common and enumerators were loose and free with their interpretation. Where in Georgia was he living in 1850? Haven't found the census yet.

On Fold3, his wife filed for widow pension and it looks like the date is Jany (January) 15, 1863. Confederate Archive, Chap. 10, File No. 26, Page 20. Very faint copy and I had to invert the print to read.

He was Confederate without a doubt so the death year of 1863 Memphis National Cemetery below is a Union soldier. Not the right John Clemens. He was Co. G 33rd Alabama.
Here's the 1850 census in Pulaski, GA, living with Martha and his first two kids, Archibald (my GGG Grandfather), and John (last name is recorded as "Clements" here): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZYZ-8YY

I don't have his father, but "Clemmons" is the spelling that is most common for the records on my branch of the family.
I'd say that having the date that his widow filed for a pension narrows his death down to between April 1862 when the 33rd regiment formed to January 1, 1863 when she filed the pension. Now to find where the 33rd was over the winter.

Murfreesboro (December 31, 1862 - January 3, 1863)

Thanks! I see now that John's wife Martha married [[Barton-8444|Seaborn Barton]] and has a daughter with him around 1864, so that seems to line up as well.

Wayne thanks for the interest in John Maximus Clemmons, I have reached out many yrs. ago to the National Archives in Washington D.C. I am not familiar with the Civil War Archives in Washington D.C. but will look into them for sure. And as for the Newkirk Family Tree I am not a paying Ancestry member so I don't get much. But thanks a million for the work you have done!
