Is there a sticker or category for Prisoners of War who didn't die there?

Hi,

I adoped an orphaned profile I bumped into while trying to match someone else on the GEDCOM from one of my late mother's ancestry trees. The person was a private in the 61st Tennessee Infantry regiment, and a prisoner of war at Lookout Point. I found and added the civil war sticker (feel free to correct my usage - it's my first time!), but became so interested in the history of Lookout Point and Civil War prisoners of war that I wondered whether there was a category or sticker for P.O.W.s, as well. All I have found so far are for people who actually died while prisoners of war.

Updating his U.S. Civil War sticker and adding his sources for service. Added categories.

Edit: his nickname was “Andy” added a short bio and the POW for confederates sticker. Also added his civil war data link source and NPS source.

Hope this helps smiley

Thanks, Andrew!

Is the "short bio" format you used a best practice? It seems to duplicate information I had put under "Marriage and family", but I hadn't used that format or included the links to WikiTree profiles. Those are all in the header section, anyway. There are also three more children that don't have WikiTree profiles. I don't really want to get side-tracked from my work with mom's GEDCOM file (still have over 600 suggested matches to consider), so I don't intend to adopt more of these orphaned profiles related to William or his father Andrew F Carr (who isn't actually a match for the William Carr in mom's tree) or add the missing ones right now. Is there some template I should use to flag that for others?

If there is no bio usually this tool to generate simple biographies is a wonderful resource. Building a great bio is not my specialty thus I use this to get most profiles started and flesh out once the parents kids etc are added.

OK - thanks again for all your help.

One question on the military side of things: Is there any way to determine how long Andrew actually stayed at Lookout Point? I'm intrigued by the whole "parole and exchange" aspect of prisoners of war in the civil war. Would prisoners who were captured at Vicksburg and "immediately paroled" have actually gone to Lookout Point? Would they have gone back into active service after their interment, or have gone home?

Here is some info from 61st Tennessee Infantry Regiment – Tennessee & the Civil War (tngenweb.org) which might help:

"...regiment was surrendered on July 4, 1863, as part of Major General M. L. Smith’s Division. Although almost immediately paroled, the men captured at Vicksburg were not declared exchanged until June 27, 1864, and some of those captured at Big Black were not released until the spring of 1865."

I also wonder whether it is accurate to cite Andrew Carr's unit as the "Mounted" Infantry if he was actually captured at Vicksburg and spent time in Lookout Point. It seems that the 61st regiment didn't become "mounted" until afterwards. Here is another quote:

"In the meantime, General Vaughn had been given command of Colonel A. W. Reynolds’ Brigade, which was mounted in December, 1863, and served the remainder of the war as mounted infantry. When the men of the 62nd who had been captured at Vicksburg were finally declared exchanged, they were assigned to this brigade and mounted. "

This sort of thing:

Roll of Honor

| category = Prisoners of War, United States of America, American Revolution

| image = WikiTree Profiles Roll of Honor-5.png

| description = Prisoner of War

| war = American Revolution

doesn't mean he died as a POW, just that he was one.

Now that you have an interest in the Civil War, you should join the Civil War Project. Monthly we do challenges which focus on some aspect of the Civil War. For instance, we have recently finished soldiers who died at the Battle of Shiloh (and are buried in Shiloh National Cemetery). We have also worked on POWs who died at Camp Chase and at Andersonville.

Here is the link to join the Civil War Project.
