Hi Kimberly, welcome to wikitree, on your g2g post please hit the edit button, and add the word Mentors this will bring a Mentor who will help you learn and understand how the wikitree works, the buttons, etc.
Start with who you do know first. work backward always. Start with your parents and put their profiles in first. If either are still living make sure you keep their profiles set to private. Add any and all info you do know about them.
As you begin creating new profiles, a lower section may pop up that starts showing names of people already in the tree, go thru these names and click the links, see if any are the ancestors you are trying to create, (usually happens more often the further back you go in your ancestors). If you find a profile that matches there is an option to "accept" this ancestor as the one you are creating, when you click it, it will automatically add link to what you are doing. basically meaning that profile is already here, you don' t have to make one, you just add record you found, which helps to verify that a connection you want to make is valid. If none of the suggestions match, just click the square boxes on the left of their names and it will keep them from being confused with the ones you are creating.
We like to use primary and good secondary sources, so look for things like birth records, baptisms, christenings, school records, work, military, death, cemetery, etc.
Free sources can be found on FamilySearch.org for many records https://www.familysearch.org/search/
If you have Problems or get stuck- "brick-walled" on an ancestor just ask in here and many people will offer up help. there are a lot of good people on Wikitree.
Also please remember wikitree uses only one profile per person who lived, so we all share our Ancestors and people may show up on profiles you create, and add informations, records, bio infos, etc. If something is not right that is put on a profile you create, private message the person, to discuss it, and work it out. If that doesn't work, you can bring the issue into g2g to discuss, but don't mention a particular person, just what the problem is on the profile.
Hope this helps.. have fun and happy hunting.
Oh when you use Family Search at the bottom of any image there will be 2 tabs, one is the transcription of the record, the other is the "citation" if you click that second tab at bottom of image you can copy and paste the citation that will bring the link over to post onto profile. This allows others to see the record(s) you find for your ancestors.
again, Have fun, and Happy Hunting
