Looking for Robert Moody's parents 1762-1823 London

John Boucher Moody was my 3x gt grandfather, a pewterer in Bermondsey. His parents were Robert Moody b 1762 and Mary Boucher b1777. They married in 1792. Robert's father, Robert, may have been a fishmonger on Leadenhall Market. His wife, possibly Elizabeth Reynolds, but I cannot find records of their births or deaths. Were they Londoners or from elsewhere? Does anybody know or is anyone related to this family?

A Robert Moody, fishmonger, Leadenhall Market left a will proved in 1777.but written in 1769

He had a  brother William, a mother Prudence, a deceased father, Robert Moody, a wife Ann.He had copyhold land in Wetherdon, Suffolk. No children mentioned.

Will on ancestry if you subscribe  ( first page ) or  https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D462477  (free to download at moment)

Thank you Helen. This is helpful. I have now downloaded the will but am curious as to why no children are mentioned. I have a friend researching Wetherden for me to see if that will add anything of interest. I'm not sure how Suffolk fits into the story but will keep looking.

Margaret
Hi Helen,

Since replying yesterday I think I have the Suffolk connection. Robert (1729) was born in Haughley/ Wetherden to Gibson and Prudence Moody. I have found various documents including apprenticeships to support this. Gibson's father's will in 1769 also mentions land and Robert the fishmonger so I may be a few generations back! Must check dates and make sure no loopholes first!

Thank you again.

Margaret
Thank you again Helen. I have spent a few days researching the Moody family based on the wills and have found it very interesting, especially as Wetherden and Isleham are fairly local to me.However unfortunately I cannot find a link to Robert and Elizabeth so my search will go on. As you suggested the Fishmonger's will didn't mention children and his wife was Ann, even though I checked to see if this was a 2nd marriage. I shall file my notes in case I need them in the future.

Hi Margaret
From my family tree:
Roberts Father Robert Moody
Birth About 1740 - Eskrick, York, Yorkshire
Marriage - Elizabeth Reynolds (1740 - 1800)
16 Oct 1759 - Shoreditch St Leonard, England

Robert Moody (1740) - His father could have been a Matthew Moody (Birth About 1710) from Pontefract, Yorkshire, England. This was taken from another members site so I'm not 100% on this one.

Robert Moody 1762- (St Leonard, Shoreditch) may have spent some time in the Hulk prison moored at Woolwich on Ship: Justitia! (1816).

John Boucher Moody was my 4x great grandfather. He was the first of 3 generations of Pewterer's in my line and apparently 4 generations in total.

Cheers
Pat

Hi Pat. I was interested to read your comments on Robert Moody's family. I have found a possible birth in 1738 Pontefract, father Matthew, a mason, but the child died the following year so it's not him. Can't find the Eskrick record. If he was born in Yorkshire I wonder why he moved to London. I believe he was a fishmonger on Leadenhall Market.
I shall look to see if Robert (1762) was on the prison ship and why? He is buried  at Globe Fields Stepney (Wesleyan).

John Boucher Moody was my 3x Gt Grandfather and so that makes us 4th cousins once removed. There were 4 generations of Pewterers. Which branch of the family are you descended from? Did you know that John's maternal grandparents were Huguenots in Spitalfields? An interesting family!

Best wishes

Margaret
Hi Margaret,

My line from John Boucher Moody is this:

Thomas Spencer Moody 1830-1895 (Bermondsey, London) - Pewterer - Mary Ann Holditch / Radenhurst 1830

Thomas Moody 1856-1913 - Pewterer Amelia Cornhill 1855-1943

Joseph James Moody 1880 (Camberwell, London) Alice Hopkins 1879-1952

Joseph James Moody 1902-1978 (Camberwell, London) Mabel Florence Norman 1908-1986 - These were my grandparents.

Yes, John Boucher Moody's Mother was Mary Boucher b.1777 (Father Peter Boucher {Pierre Bouchard - Huguenot} 1744-1815), (Mother Margaret Campar 1747-1824 Bethnal Green, Middlesex)

I have managed to go quite far back on the Bouchard and Campar / Campart french lines.

I would be interested to hear about your line. I suspect ours split after the second Thomas' b.1856 as he was the third in the line of pewterers. I have an article from the Pewterer society listing the 4 generations.

Hello patrick,

Thank you for the outline of your Moody tree. I think the 4th generation of pewterers was your Gt Grandfather Joseph James Moody's brother - Thomas A Moody (1878) was a hammerman. May be there were others too.

My line only has two generations of Moody family as John's youngest daughter Annie married James Watkins in 1861. Their 2nd son Arthur John Watkins (1865) was my Gt Grandfather, married to Mary Ann Cooper. Ernest Sidney Watkins (1893 their 4th child) married to Dorothy A Ives. They were my Grandparents.

I was interested to see the Bonham's sale page thank you.

I am unsure about Robert on the prison ship - though I know ages were sometimes vague, this suggests he was born in 1760, and there is another Robert in that year. Anyway if it was him he was pardoned!

I have followed up on the Will of Robert (1729)the Leadenhall Market fishmonger and this leads me to think his father was Gibson Moody b1704 in Cambridgeshire and married to Prudence. I am still piecing this together but it makes some sense as Gibson's father's will also mentions Fishmonger and land in Suffolk. If I can verify it all, that's 4 generations back from Robert (1762) and Mary Boucher!

Best wishes,

Margaret
Hello Patrick,

I have enjoyed researching the Moody line but sadly the Fishmonger was not linked to my family, as far as I can see. The various wills were interesting, all mentioning the fishmonger over 3 generations in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, not far from me! I shall continue looking for Robert (possibly from Yorkshire) and Elizabeth Reynolds. Hope to find him one day, like I did the maternal Huguenot line!

Best wishes,

Margaret

Thank you Wayne. This confirms my thinking on Robert and Mary but do you know anything about the next generation back? I would like to find out more about Robert's father, also called Robert, possibly born about 1740, and his wife, possibly Elizabeth.

Hi Margaret and other Moody descendants, I'm a bit late to this but John Boucher Moody was my 4x great grandfather.

I can't answer your question as I haven't got any further than establishing JB Moody's grandparents were Robert Moody b 1740 and Elizabeth Reynolds b 1740, so I'm interested to see the answers here.

My paternal grandmother was Ethel Moody (daughter of Thomas Moody, son of Thomas Spencer Moody, son of John Boucher Moody).

I have a very battered Moody tankard!
