Robert Thomas Brown born Approx 1823, England

Question

Robert Thomas Brown, Born in England Approx 1823, migrated to America with wife, possibly Sarah, and two or three sons.

Father of Walter Thomas Brown. Who lived in Illinois until about 1938 when he died. In census Walter states he was born at sea, in New York and in England. States both parents were from England. He was born in 1851. On marriage certificate to Elizabeth Jane hair states fathers name is Robert, in other documentation he states fathers name is Thomas. i've seen the spelling of last name as BROWN or BROWNE.

Does anyone have an idea how I can track this ancestor, Robert Thomas or his wife. I've been looking for 30 years.
