ALICE "AMANDA"'S OBITUARY WHITMAN, Alice “Amanda” - Aged 96, of Berwick, formerly of Kentville and Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully in Grand View Manor, Berwick, on Thursday, October 27, 2022. Born in Berwick, Kings Co., she was the daughter of the late Charles Kenneth and Bessie Olivia (Cox) Saunders. Amanda graduated from Berwick High School in 1945. She worked for a short time as a telephone operator with the Berwick telephone office and then worked as a postal clerk in the Berwick Post Office. She was a member of the Berwick Baptist Church and Sunday School teacher. Following her marriage to Paul Whitman in 1948, she lived in Kentville until moving to Sydney Mines in 1952. Her husband Paul was co-founder of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home and together they provided service to the community of Sydney Mines and surrounding area for over 30 years.

While living in Sydney Mines, she was a member of Clyde Ave Baptist Church where she was active in the Sunday School, Ladies Guild, and the Women’s Missionary Society of which she was a Dominion Life Member. She also served as president of the Archibald Barrington Home and School Association, President of Harbour View Hospital Auxiliary and a former member of the Johnstone Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star.

In 1982, Amanda and Paul retired and moved to Kentville, and she was active in the Kentville United Baptist Church, where she served in the Ladies Auxiliary, W.M.S and as a deacon. Moving to Berwick in 2003, she continued to serve with the Ladies Auxiliary and W.M.S. of Berwick Baptist Church, and was also a life member of the Evangeline No. 15 and Laurel No. 67 Chapters, of Order of the Eastern Star. Amanda enjoyed cooking, crafts and was an avid knitter. She loved to entertain and was happiest when planning family reunions and gatherings with friends.

Survived by her son, Alan (Marnie) Maple Ridge, B.C.; two daughters, Alice Whitman, Greenwood; Janet (Mark) Mahoney, New Maryland, N.B.; three grandchildren, Matthew (Melissa) Mahoney, Fredericton, N.B.; Stacy (John) Lillico, Maple Ridge, B.C.; Julie Mahoney (Rich Spindola), Trenton, Ont.; five great grandchildren, Liam, Alexa, and Sophia Mahoney, Fredericton, N.B.; Nathan and Kara Lillico, Maple Ridge, B.C.; sister-in-law, Marjorie Saunders, Berwick. Predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, Paul R. Whitman; son, Charles Paul Whitman; infant great grand daughter, Emma Mahoney; sisters, Eva Saunders, Margaret (Fred) Fowke, Cecilia (Weldon) Adamson, Emily (Bob) Beaton; brothers, Edmund (Reta) Saunders, Guilford Saunders, and Douglas (Evelyn) Saunders.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 30, in Berwick Baptist Church, 265 Commercial St., Berwick. Rev. Andrew Conrad and Rev. Evan Colford officiating. The family would like those attending the service to wear facemasks. For those who are unable to attend the funeral service, there will be a livestreaming available beginning at 1:55 p.m. ADT, Sunday, October 30, by selecting the “livestream” option at the top of the funeral home webpage. A reception will follow in the church annex. Interment will be in Berwick Cemetery.

A special thank you to Michael and Yiwen Walsh and Staff at Wedgewood House for Seniors, Kentville, N.S. where Amanda lived for four and a half years. Also, the family would like to thank the Management and Staff at Grand View Manor, Berwick, N.S. where she resided for the last seven months. The loving care provided to Amanda at both places was very much appreciated by the family.
