Obituary
Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser (NSW : 1912 - 1955), Thursday 6 July 1944, page 3
Mr. GEORGE KING
Miller's Forest lost its oldest and most honored resident, in the person of Mr. George King, who died in Maitland hospital, on Friday afternoon. He had gone to hospital about a week before having contracted a cold, upon which pneumonia intervened. His condition did not appear, early in his illness to be serious enough to cause death, but his heart failed to stand up to the strain upon it and at the round old age of 87, his long and useful life closed.
He filled the office, of post master for 33 years, and followed on after Mr. J. E. Lewis who left the district. Prior to Mr. Lewis' occupancy of the office the post master was Mr. H. S. Carpenter, he carrying on till he left the Forest in 1881. During Mr. King's time the mails were carried on the steamers passing to and fro twice daily to Morpeth, Raymond Terrace, Newcastle, Sydney. The office grew from a small beginning during Mr. King's time in 1889 to a fully equipped office in a few years. The office was, after Mr. Lewis' time transferred to Mr. A. J. King; then shortly after to Mr. George King's residence in 1889 and it is still there after a 55 years' term, though, for the last 16 years the office has been under Mr. Furley.
Deceased's term of office was 33 years. He was the Secretary of the Williams River District, G.U.O.O.F. and also secretary of the Farmers' Home Lodge for about 40 years, and earned the gratitude and congratulations of the members for the faithful services he tendered the cause of local Oddfellow ship. He was one on the first members of the Progress Association, and gave useful services in this organisation, which today ranks as the oldest Progress Association on the coast. He too was an active member of the Drainage Union, established over 50 years ago, and carried on his duties in this institution till he retired from his active daily routine. He was likewise an enthusiastic adherent of the Methodist Church, and never omitted an opportunity to do any thing that was required of him in furthering the welfare of the denomination he belonged to. In public matters he took a keen interest and aided by his attendance and voice any movement that seemed to have a beneficial tendency.
He was strong politically in the economic outlook — that is, the outlook that helped the individual to develop the best that was in him, and was never an advocate for State run industries, as they meant the greatest amount of money for the least amount of work. He looked for a fair deal in all things and was always ready to see that others got it from himself. He knew the value cf personal effort, because in his early days anything they wanted had to be done by themselves and whether it were roads, churches, schools or public utilities the personal effort was the thing that gained it. He scorned the outlook of the present day, when if anything is wanted, some one else must find it, mostly with a strong leaning on the Government to find it. Today, he said, "it was get all you can for as little as you can," and he did not expect it to work for the benefit of the future of the State. In referring to the developments in the district, he could go back to the period when the settlers anxious to find some means of improving the general conditions of their life, formed the Progress Association. . . . .
Mr. King has left some memoirs of Miller's Forest, from his first associations and these will be published later on.
His family surviving him is Mr. A. J. King, Willoughby; Mr. William King, Adamstown; Mrs. Geo. Apps, and Miss Alice King, Sydney.
His surviving sons are Mr. Harry King, Neutral Bay; Mr. Harold King, Gosford; Mr. Bert King, Wollongong and Mr. Jas. King, Miller's Forest. His daughters are Mrs. Mackie, Auburn ; Mrs. L. F. Monkley and Mrs. J. L. Davies, Millers' Forest; Mrs. H. Fletcher, Chatswood; Mrs. Larven, Earlwood.
The funeral on Saturday afternoon, was very, largely attended to the Raymond Terrace cemetery. The Rev. W. S. Chaseling officiated at the church and the graveside. [5]
