Strathsprey Herald Newspaper published a glowing obituary for George on Thursday 22 October 1908. Only the Paragraph on Freemasons has been copied here- "A Distinguished Freemason"- "The Captain was a man of varied interests but it may be truly said he dedicated the last years of his life to Free Masons. He was a Freemason to the core. Everything that pertained to that exalted order awakened his keenest sympathies and elicited his unswerving support. We believe there was no Free Mason in the north of Scotland in possessions of so many degrees as Captain Grant".

He was invested into the order while in India in 1863; to become Worshipful Master of his Mother Lodge. He was Past Time Master of the Royal Arch Chapter in Calcutta in 1866; and at Peshawar in 1877. He was expert Master of the Supreme Council of the 33rd degree. Freemasonry in Morayshire owes much to Captain Grant. Under his wide guidance as Worshipful Master, Lodge Craig Ellachie prospered, and brothers sincerely mourn his loss.

George died 18 October 1908 after suffering cancer of the tongue. He was buried in Grantown, Kingassi, cemetery Inverness Scotland, Plot 488a.

At the date of his death; captain Grant was Provisional Grand Substitute; of the Province of Moray; St. Columbia's Episcopal Church Council of Moray. Captain Grant who was a conservative in politics, was a Justice of The Peace for the County. A member of Columbian's Episcopal Church he was the Church Warden and lay Representative of the Diocesan Council of Moray and Caithness".
