The New England Planters were a specific group of people attracted to Nova Scotia by the land grants and the vote. in 1758, Nova Scotia became the first British Colony with its own legislature, an experiment in democracy that was specifically designed to attract settlers from New England to this region. They arrived after the fall of Québec in 1759 until about 1775, before the onset of the American Revolution.

They are not to be confused with

  • Acadians, French settlers who arrived in this area as early as 1604. Although many were explused in 1755, others remained. The Acadian period ended when the French relinquished their claim in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris
  • Other English soldiers and settlers who lived in settlements such as Canso, Annapolis Royal, Louisbourg and Halifax during the contested period 1713-1763. This includes the Cornwallis ships that founded Halifax in 1749.
  • Protestant settlers] from Continental Europe (so called "Foreign Protestants") who were recruited to Halifax in 1750-52, many of whom founded Lunenburg in 1753
  • Loyalists who came during and after the American Revolution (1776-1784)
