Eleazer was born Sept. 24, 1736[1], and baptized September 26[2], the son of Thomas Butler and Abigail Craft of Ipswich and Windham. Windham was founded in 1726, and his parents were early settlers there. Their marriage was recorded in both places, as are the births of their first three children (birth in Windham, baptism in Ipswich), however his sister Abigail's birth and his mother's death are only recorded in Windham. It was common for a family in a new settlement to record vital records "back home" for several years. It is less common for a new settlement to record events that occurred before its residents arrived, and when this occurred the new settlement's records generally noted the location. In 1739, Thomas Butler and Abigail Craft were dismissed from the Chebacco Church in Ipswich and they moved to Windham, Connecticut. It appears on the balance that Eleazer was born in Ipswich since his parents did not move to Windham until 1739.
On January 11, 1758, he married Lydia Durkee, the daughter of Stephen Durkee and Lois Moulton of Windham[3][4], and in 1762 they emigrated to Nova Scotia, along with her brother Phineas Durkee, and were among the founders of Yarmouth[5][6][7]
Their children included:
Lois, born November 17, 1758[8], who married Benjamin Barnard, son of Rev. Thomas [4]
Chloe, a twin born June 13, 1760[9], who married Capt. John Barnard, and then married Waitstill Lewis[4]
Lydia, a twin born June 13, 1760[9], who married Capt. Nehemiah Patch, and then married John Richan, of the Orkney Islands[4]
Eleazar, born 1763, who married Joanna Ellenwood, daughter of Benjamin[4]
Andrew, born December 31, 1766, who married Sarah (Durfee) Camp, a widow, and daughter of Shelburne Loyalist Capt. John Durfee[4]
Nathan, born September 8, 1768, who died at sea, unmarried[4]
