Heman Adams was born June 05, 1761 in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Mass., the son of Nathaniel Adams and Thankful Chadwick.[1] At age 17, his name appeared on a "Muster and Pay Roll" of Capt. Joseph Griffith's Company, Col. John Jacob's regiment, engaged June 3, 1778, for 7 months, so was a Revolutionary War veteran. He enlisted from Barnstable county, as a private in the Mass. militia. He was pensioned for his service in 1820. In his enlistment papers in 1779, he was described as age 17 years, stature 5 ft. 4 in., light complexion.[2]
He married Lucy Cobb on November 14, 1781 in Sandwich. Although the marriage record does not appear in the Sandwich Vital records, the following sworn statement of marriage was contained in the Pension Application file for Heman Adams:
After their marriage they had two children born to them in Sandwich. A daughter, Asenath (named as Anna in their family record in the Sandwich records), was born in 1785[4], and a son, Lot, in 1786.[5]
In the census returns for 1790 and 1800, Heman is found in Sandwich with his wife and two children.[6][7] By 1810, Heman and Lucy were living without children[8], Asenath and Lot having by then established their own households and families in Sandwich. Interestingly, in that 1810 census, there is another woman in Heman's household, over the age of 45. It is possible this is Lucy's mother, Thankful (Garrett) Cobb, as she was still living in 1800 (enumerated in the census in Sandwich), and no death record is found for her in the Sandwich Vital records before that date.
Sometime between 1810 and 1816, Heman and Lucy, with their son-in-law, Warren Smith and daughter Asenath (married in 1806 in Sandwich), pulled up roots in Sandwich, and removed to Reilly Township in Butler County, Ohio, with five or more very young grandchildren in tow. Heman was in his early fifties, and Lucy in her late forties. The area in which they settled later became known as Hamilton, Ohio. According to census records, Heman was a farmer in Hamilton.[9]
He died there Nov. 21, 1848 at the age of 87 years.[10][11] He is buried in the Indian Creek Cemetery, Reily Township, Butler County, Ohio. The headstone is still standing, a plain headstone and it is engraved with, "In memory of Herman Adams Died 21 November 1848 Aged 87 years, 5 months, 2 days."[12]. Butler County records state that he was a Revolutionary soldier.[13] His gravestone can be seen at Find A Grave: Memorial #22291401
