Robert Abernathy was born in 1752 in Granville county, North Carolina, the son of Miles Abernathy and Sarah Ann Ann Jones. He was the brother of Battee Abernathy, John Abernathy, Jones Abernathy, Elizabeth Betsy Abernathy and John Abernathy.

Robert wrote his will December 19, 1826 in St. Clair County, Illinois which was probated 1832.[1]

DNA testing shows that Robert is very closely related to Miles Abernathy, both Miles and Robert called sons Battee. It is not short for Bartholomew, but a surname coming from a Marriage in the Harwell line. Batte pronounced Battee and an old English surname whos family group come from Skipton, Yorkshire, England and well documented as First settlers in the Southern Colonies by Liz Shifflett here on WikiTree.

Robert did not marry Sarah Nichols, a Robert and Sarah Nichols were the Grand Parents of Rev Dr Laban Abernathy a famous Lincoln County educator and cousin of William Sherrill who wrote " The Annals of Lincoln County" and in which Sarah Nichols is mentioned and not connected to this family group nor is Rev Dr Laban Abernathy.
