JOHN ABBOTT,[1] born at Andover, Massachusetts, Feb 1718 son of John Abbott and Hannah Chubb;[2][3] John died at Andover current day Maine, 1803 and is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery;[4] married at Andover, 17 Jun 1746,[5] Hannah Farnum, born at Andover, 5 Jan 1724/25 daughter of Jonathan Farnum and Elizabeth Barker;[6] Hannah died at Andover current day Maine, 1806.[7]
Hannah Farnum and John Abbott resided in Andover, Massachusetts for much of their lives before making the move to Andover, Maine in the late 1780’s. John was a farmer.[8]
A portion of John and Hannah’s property in Andover, Massachusetts came from the estate of Hannah’s father Jonathan Farnum. On 6 October 1761, heirs of Jonathan Farnum quitclaimed their interests in a portion of the estate to John Abbot 3rd and Hannah his wife of Andover for payment of £100. Those quitclaiming to their sister Hannah and her husband John Abbot were James How of Methuen and Elizabeth his wife, Benjamin Hall of Methuen and Rebecka his wife, and Richard Barker of Pelham, New Hampshire and Anne his wife. The property included a 22-acre portion of the homestead of Jonathan Farnum and four acres of tillage land.[9]John Abbot of Andover served as a private in Lieut. Peter Poor’s company that marched at the alarm to Cambridge. John was credited with 2 ½ days of service.[10]
On 1 May 1787, John Abbot, Jr. and his wife Hannah of Andover, in consideration of £204, conveyed four tracts of land in Andover totaling about 63 acres with dwelling house and barn to Samuel Phillips, Jr. On the same date, John and Hannah’s son Jonathan with his wife Ruth sold their property to Samuel Phillips. Son Phillip and his wife Elizabeth sold their property to Samuel Phillips on 3 February 1789.[11]
In 1790, the families of John Abbott and his sons Jonathan Abbott, Phillip Abbott, and John, Jr. were enumerated at Sudbury, Canada, York, Maine, John, Sr.’s household being one male 16 and over and one female.[12][13]
John, Hannah, and family were early settlers of Andover, Maine and settled on an upland lot which they developed for several years before the lots were officially distributed. The lots to early settlers were confirmed to the occupants at a meeting on 23 January 1795 with lot two being assigned to John Abbott.[14]
Hannah Farnum and John Abbott were parents of six children born at Andover, Massachusetts.
