JONATHAN ABBOTT, born at Andover, Massachusetts, 12 Apr 1748[1] son of John Abbott and Hannah Farnum;[2] Jonathan died at Andover, Maine, 26 Jan 1833 and is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery;[3][4] married at Andover, Massachusetts, 10 Nov 1768,[5] RUTH BRAGG, born at Andover, Massachusetts, 26 Jun 1748 daughter of Thomas Bragg and Dorothy Ingalls;[6] Ruth died at Andover, Maine, 25 Jan 1823.[7]
Jonathan Abbott and Ruth Bragg resided in Andover, Massachusetts and Andover, Maine. They made the move to Andover, Maine with Jonathan’s parents and brothers Philip and John. Jonathan and his family were in what would become Andover, Maine about 1789. Jonathan was a farmer.
On 1 May 1787, Jonathan Abbot yeoman of Andover with his wife Ruth, in consideration of £45, sold 23 acres in Andover to Samuel Phillips, Jr. On 6 September 1787, Jonathan sold nine acres to Daniel Stickney of Bradford for £15.11.6. On 2 July 1789, Jonathan was of Andover, Massachusetts when he sold his 100-acre homestead lands in Andover to Ephraim Abbot for payment of £356.[8]
The household of Jonathan Abbot was enumerated as seven persons at Sudbury Canada, York, Maine with two males 16 and over, two males under 16, and three females.[9]
The early settlers of Andover, Maine began developing their properties before they were officially assigned. At a meeting of proprietors on 23 Jan 1795, lot 11 was confirmed to Jonathan Abbott.[10]
On 8 June 1797, Jonathan’s son Enos Abbot and his wife Sarah, in consideration of one hundred dollars, sold to his father Jonathan Abbot one right of land in East Andover being a sixty-fourth part of the township, lot number 11 on the west side of the river.[11]
In 1800, the household of Jonathan Abbot was eight persons at East Andover, York County: one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, two males under 10, one male 10 to 15, two males 16 to 25, one female 10 to 15.[12] The household was four persons in 1820: one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, one male 26 to 44, and one female 16 to 25.[13]
On 13 March 1813, Jonathan Abbott sold 375 acres in East Andover to Farnum Abbott of Cambridgeport, Massachusetts for $2,000.[14]
Although it seems possible/likely that this Jonathan Abbott had service during the Revolution, no service was confirmed for him. The service previously attributed to him was that of Jonathan Abbott (1739-1817) of Andover or Jonathan Abbott (1723-1805) of Brookfield. New applications to the DAR for descendants of this Jonathan Abbott must prove service.
Jonathan Abbott and Ruth Bragg were parents of ten children, the eldest eight children born at Andover, Massachusetts and the youngest two children perhaps at Andover current day Maine.[15]
