The origin and family history of Sarah, wife of Samuel ANDREWS, is unknown and of great interest to M.Lohmeyer, who is researching this family. If you have information to contribute, I would love to hear from you.

Sarah's Timeline

17?? : Birth details and maiden name unknown as no marriage record has yet been identified.

18?? : Marriage to Samuel ANDREWS some time prior to 1813.

1813 : Possible birth of son James Andrews (27 May) at St. Mary-le-Bone workhouse in Middlesex, London.

1814 : Birth of daughter Jane Andrews (27 May) at St. Mary-le-Bone workhouse in Middlesex, London.

1816 : Birth of son Henry Andrews (29 Apr) at St. Mary-le-Bone workhouse in Middlesex, London.

1819 : Birth of son William Andrews (2 Jan) at St. Mary-le-Bone workhouse in Middlesex, London.

1832 : Emigration of daughter Jane to Australia (7 Jun).

The fate of Sarah, her husband Samuel, and their other children James, Henry, William (and others?) is unknown.

Sarah's Story

Samuel and Sarah ANDREWS were long-term inmates at the St. Mary-le-Bone workhouse in Middlesex, London from at least 1813 to 1832. As workhouses were funded through donations and a levy on local businesses, access to the workhouse was usually open only to the poor of the local parish. It is therefore likely that Samuel and Sarah were originally of the Marylebone or an adjoining parish.

Whilst resident at the Workhouse, Samuel and Sarah had three, possibly four children:

• James (b. 27 May 1813, although this requires confirmation)
• Jane (27 May 1814)
• Henry (29 Apr 1816)
• William (2 Jan 1819).

In 1832, their daughter Jane emigrated to Australia in search of a new start and a better life. She became the foundress of a large clan of ANDREWS and GOULD familines. The fate of her family back in Marylebone is unknown.
