Biography

Maria was born in 1834. She was the daughter of William Spurdle and Sarah Sibley.

Christening Date: 20 August 1834
Christening Place: St. Marys, Beaminster, Dorset, England[1]

UK Census Date 1841: Living with her parents, three siblings and two other individuals in East Street, Beaminster, Dorset, England. Aged about 6.

Maria was 6 years old when she emigrated from England to New Zealand with her parents and three siblings, travelling on the ship Timandra. They departed from Plymouth on 2 November 1841, and arrived into New Plymouth, New Zealand on 24 February 1842.[2]

In 1853 Maria had a son; Edwin James.

She married William George Williams on 21 November 1854 in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. He was considerably older than Maria and although they appear to have had no children together, Maria did have at least one child to Charles Arthur O'Neill whilst married to William.

Maria married, secondly, Charles Arthur O'Neill on 26 January 1867 in New Plymouth, two years after her first husband's death. They had about 8 children; William, Catherine, Frederick, Mary Ann, Ellen, Lucinda, Henry and Arthur.

She passed away in 1876.
