John married Ann Elizabeth (Petch) Scandlyn on the 18 March 1878 in Inglewood, New Plymouth District, Taranaki, New Zealand. ^[2]They had about seven children;

John passed away on the 25 November 1927 in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand, age 72. ^[3] He was buried in the Te Henui Cemetery, Fitzroy, New Plymouth District, Taranaki, New Zealand .^[4]
