Biography

Bahamas Project
Thomas Saunders is part of a Bahamian family.

Thomas was born about 1700.

His sons Nathaniel and Thomas b Sept 25 1725, baptized in Providence/NP on Nov 24 1725 appear to have been twins. (p. 11) Hallett

Thomas appeared in the Woodes Rogers 1731 Census in Harbour Island listed with a wife & 4 children (p. 23) and in the Fitzwilliam 1734 Census in Harbour Island listed with a wife & 5 children (p.25) Hallett.

By the Book C Census (1737-40), Thomas and Ruth Saunders were listed with six children (but not in the Eleuthera section- perhaps, like the Lowes, they also had property on NP.) (Hollis Hallett, Early Colonists of the Bahamas, pages 28 and 47).

Research Notes

Were there 2 married men named Thomas Saunders who lived in the Bahamas at the same time OR did Thomas and Ruth Saunders like the Lowes and other families, move between dwellings on NP and HI to weather piracy and the other vicissitudes of colonial life ?

About Thomas Saunders Providence/NP records :

1722 Assessment for Maintence of Minister Thomas Saunders 2sh Benjamin Saunders 4 sh- amount of assessment suggests that neither was wealthy . Both men would have been born bef 1702. (Benjamin possibly as early as, Thomas as early as .) They are listed together, Thomas first. Brothers? Or was Benjamin the father and of Thomas ? (Since Thomas had a son named Benjamin in 1728, it seems unlikely that the Benjamin in the Assesment of 1722 was his son.) Hallett

Oct 4 1723: A couple listed as Thomas and Mary Saunders baptized a daughter Ruth in Providence/NP . Might the names of mother and daughter have been reversed or is this a different family grouping? (p. 10) Hallett

1724: Baptisms begin to be recorded for HI

1727 List of all men who can bear arms: Providence section includes Benjamin Saunders and Thomas Saunders They are listed together, Benjamin first. No Thomas listed at Harbour Island. Hallett

According to the Woodes Rogers 1731 Census in NP , it seems that there may have been another Thomas Saunders, the same or a contemporary ? His household: 1 Woman married & unmarried, 3 White children, 0 Adult Negoroes , 0 Negro Children vs. 4 children for This Saunders at H.I.

Thomas Saunders of NP seems to live 3 doors up the street from Benjamn Saunders Sr. and Benj. Watkins Jr. and Sr. live on either side of him (if the list works that way). A widow Saunders lives 15 or so lots away. (p.23.) Hallett
