Joy Amana Lowe was born 15 Nov 1939 in Nassau, Bahamas to Spencer Baldwin Clerihew 'Clarie' Lowe and Fanny Merton Lowe, both born LOWE in 1903 at Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas. Joy was the sixth of seven children. Joy attended the Methodist Missionary School 'Queen's College' in Nassau. After college in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, she returned to Nassau, a teacher 1962-1964 in Grades 2 and 3 at Queen's College. During this time she met Al P. Jossi 1929-2014 of Portland, Oregon. He came to Nassau on the 'Bahama Star' cruise ship in February 1963, and attended her church. They married 16 Sep 1964 in Nassau. They lived in Portland, Oregon, raised four children. Al was called to heaven two months before their 50th wedding anniversary.
Family relationships Joy prized. The move from Nassau, Bahamas to far away Portland, Oregon lit her internal fire to record her known ancestry for her four children. She did the same for their father Al Jossi's ancestry in Switzerland. Research in documents there traced Al's Jossi lineage back to the 1500s.
Joy interviewed her father Clarie Lowe in his long years after retirement as a merchant in Nassau . He gave and she taped his 90-year experience, plus his knowledge from family lore in the 1800s. He remarked, "You know we have Jewish blood." She thought that to be a jest... and failed to ask him to explain... she lost what he might have told. He did say the common LOWE folklore, "There were about five LOWE brothers in the Bahamas. We think that their ship had wrecked in Bermuda," he said. Unknown to us is to which ancestor this repeated story may have occurred.
At the Nassau Archives Joy traced our LOWE documents to a Matthew Lowe, pirate in a 1715 record. She suspects he may have been born in Barbados, possibly related to a Gideon Lowe and Martha Gilbert. Matthew named a son Gideon, and this name repeats through generations. Further research is needed. DNA Genetic Genealogy results for the male LOWE tests do reveal matches with scattered Jews.
The passion for history preservation motivates Joy Lowe Jossi to write her ABACO Mama & Papa LOWE's life tales. "You can take the girl from the island, but you can't take the island from the girl." A true quote.

You are our great Lowe expert. I found a Lowe related record jut now while looking for something else. Rather than loose it, I left the information at Parks-3484 for you to see. It shows Lowe-Parks_Higgs relation 1866-68, just after the hurricane. I hope it is of interest. Cheers! Cheers!
I am so excited someone edited this.
