Biography

Alexander Runciman^[1] is estimated to have been born about 1695.

From the naming pattern of children believed to belong to this family, we might expect his parents to be a James and Helen - but that is no more than a possible guide. Henderson-2297 13:06, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

There are three individuals named Alexander Runciman (or its variants) whose baptisms are recorded in the registers of the Church of Scotland parishes in East Lothian:

1. Runciman, Alexander, Baptized: 24 Feb 1691 parents: James Runciman in Dunbar Parish OPR 706/ 10 80
2. Runsiman, Alexander, Baptized: 4 Sep 1692 parents: John Runsiman / Margret Raw in Prestonkirk Parish OPR 717/ 10 112
3. Runcyman, Alexander, Baptized: 11 Sep 1692 parents: James Runcyman / Christian Stewart in Innerwick Parish OPR 711/ 20 22

Whether any of these married Jennet Hendryson in 1720 is indeterminate.

This date being derived from an Alexander witnessing baptisms of his assumed grandchildren up to 1770 (with a later bap. 1773 at Belhaven not having an Alexander as a witness); the other Alexanders in East Lothian not being of an age to be likely witnesses in this time period^[2][3][4][5]

We have a paper trail vs DNA conundrum.

Several assumed descendants, several DNA haplogroups.

Haplogroup I-A11400 (aka A11393 on yFull) is now confirmed, with two descendant lines from grandson Thomas Runciman matching:

one from John & Mary (WEATHERLEY) RUNCIMAN,

the other from George & Janet (DARLING) RUNCIMAN,

along with these descendants being excellent Y-DNA matches (BigY testing) to three other lines, at least two known to be from the same small area.^[8]

BUT we do not have any yDNA from lines other than grandson Thomas.
