Biography

Melvin Roberts, age 79, died Monday, November 09, 2009 at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls following a brief illness with cancer. His funeral service will be at 11:30am on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Miller West Funeral Chapel. Family present visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-7pm at Miller West. Burial will be in Pipestone, MN. Melvin LeRoy Roberts was born on Nov. 19, 1929 to William and Viola (Grimm) Roberts. Melvin graduated from Deep River, Iowa and was married to Doris Gass on March 24, 1950. They were married until 1978. Melvin married Willy Steuck on November 17, 1979. Melvin was a long time over-the-road truck driver. Melvin drove with his wife Willy for many years. He started driving a fuel truck for his father at the age of eighteen. He then starting driving gravel trucks and later bought his own semi. Melvin hauled cattle throughout the Midwest. Melvin is survived by his wife, Willy; children: Jack (Corpus Christi, TX), Debbie Boudonck (Montezuma, IA), Kathi (Tony) Simmons (Columbus Junction, IA) and Carol (Scott) Morrow (Deep River, IA); one step-daughter, Sandy (John) Wodzinski (Sioux Falls); two step-sons, Norman (Julie) Steuck (Hartford) and Michael Steuck (Sioux Falls); six grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; five-great grandchildren with two on the way; one step great-grandchild; one sister, Imogene (Arnold) Schultz of Grundy Center, IA; two nieces and one nephew. Melvin was a semi owner and operator for many years. He drove truck for First Rate Construction for the past nine years with great pride until ill health forced him to quit, one month ago. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents William and Viola (Grimm) Roberts, who lived to be 100 years of age.
