I am an active member of the Pike One Name Study Project. Other than my own Pike ancestors, my special interest is in Pike families who emigrated to Australia, and their origins, particularly those in Wiltshire, England. I have also worked on extending and connecting many other Pike profiles in Australia, New Zealand, and England.

Note: IF I AM MANAGER FOR A PROFILE THAT IS ONE OF YOUR DIRECT ANCESTORS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME & I'LL ADD YOU AS THE MANAGER - just because I am currently the manager of a profile does not mean I am directly related .... I may be just "minding" the profile until a family member finds them!

My Ancestors

My own PIKE family originated from Tidcombe (a small village) in Wiltshire, England, where my 5xGGF, Joseph Pike (~1748-1818), lived. His two sons (my 4xGGF) James Pike (1797) and his brother, Joseph Pike (1789-1870), along with their wives and children (a combined family of 16 in total) emigrated to Australia in 1840 as free (assisted) settlers. Neither were young men (in their mid-late forties) and both listed their occupations as "agricultural labourer" (as did one of their older sons, whilst an elder daughter is listed as a maid). They arrived in South Australia from London on the ship Fairlie on July 7 1840. Many of their descendants soon moved on to other states of Australia - Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

My paternal grandmother was a BRICKNELL. Her family, James Bricknell (1813-1895), emigrated to Australia from Ropley, Hampshire, England in 1856, and settled in Tasmania, where she married into the PIKE family.

My maternal grandfather was a TREWHELLA. His family, Theophilus Trewhella (~1825-1912), emigrated to Australia from Cornwall, England, in 1855, and settled in Buninyong, Victoria.

My maternal grandmother was a McKENZIE. Her family, Frank McKenzie (~1876-1962), settled in Buninyong, Victoria, where she met and married my grandfather TREWHELLA. Her father's origins remain unknown, as we can only trace him back to Geelong, Victoria, about 1850, as he listed his parents as "unknown" on his marriage certificate.

I have Scottish origins, from my GGrandmother, who was a ROBERTSON. She was born in Paisley, Scotland, and was only two years old when she arrived in Victoria in 1854 with her parents, Duncan McKellar Robertson (1830-1905). She married into the PIKE family.

Hi, Christine: I note you have Dansons of Harbour Grace in your tree. I have an ancestor in my tree by the name of Sarah Danson Snow born 1827 of Edward Henry Snow and Elizabeth Dormady, as you may recall Captain William Henry Pike (of George and Mary) 1849-1877 was the biological father of my GM, Sarah Jane Snow. Her mother was Anna Dora Snow (1845-1922) of Edward and Elizabeth. In any event I have been trying to find a conncection between the Snows and Dansons to no avail. Ideas? Another topic, would you grant me permission to compare my family Gedmatch accounts and yours. Much appreciated.

Hi Frank,

Sorry, but I am not related to the Pikes in Newfoundland - I have just been helping to try and connect and cleanup the Newfoundland Pike profiles already in WikiTree.

If I come across anything about the Danson-Snow connection I will let you know.

Re: Elizabeth (Pike) Brock (-1744)

I wish I could work out where Elizabeth came from before she married as she is unconnected to the main tree and my interest is rather tangential. Thank you for improving her biography. However, I am a bit puzzled as to why you added 'link not available without subscription' to the marriage citation. My experience with www.findmypast.co.uk is that English parish baptisms and marriages are available without subscription (a free account is all that's required), it is only burials that are behind the paywall. Are the access rules different on other countries' versions of FMP? Ruth

Hi Christine.

I noticed you sent me two thank yous today for Amy Pyke Stabb (1765-). 😊. Amy has been one of my brick walls. I’ve been trying to see if her family was part of the Newfoundland fishery that stemmed from Devon but have so far been unsuccessful. I’m interested in joining the Pike Project.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for contacting me. It would be great to have another helping hand on the Pike project - just go to the project page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Pike_Name_Study) and follow instructions there on joining, and update the page with your details.

Currently, there is no-one working on Newfoundland Pikes, so I hope you can locate those connections you are hoping for.

Good luck, and best wishes, Christine

Thanks Christine,

I have noted that you are adding sources and references to my Wiltshire family. I was planning to say before that although your focus is Tidcombe, it could be reasonable to add the family connections in Ham and Fosbury for more connections. Maybe not so much immediate family but a broader group that might be connected.

posted by Steve Thomas
I came across Esther Rolfe, who married Thomas Whitbread, whilst researching the Blundy family, as she married Stephen Blundy after Thomas died, so I added their children too, as they were critical to verifying the connections.
posted by Christine Pike
More migrants from Wiltshire.

You have already noted Isaac Whitebread, his elder two sons were christened in Tidcombe. Isaac emigrated with his family on 'Charles Kerr', arriving 17 Jun 1840. Also on that voyage was his brother-in-law George Mills with wife and children.

posted by Steve Thomas
Hi Christine. James Whitbread (1806-1890) was buried at St John's Churchyard on Church Street, Salisbury, South Australia. I have just noticed that 150m north, Church Street intersects with 'Wiltshire Street'. I suspect that Shadrach and Rachael had some influence on the street name.  :-)

Hi Christine. Thank you for posting so much information onto the profile of Anthony (Stanitzki-9). I am only a distant relative via marriage in the Henschke family.

I do like and will copy the paragraph in your profile "Note: IF I AM MANAGER FOR A PROFILE THAT IS ONE OF YOUR DIRECT ANCESTORS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME & I'LL ADD YOU AS THE MANAGER - just because I am currently the manager of a profile does not mean I am directly related .... I may be just "minding" the profile until a family member finds them!".

Regards, Steve.

P.S. I spend most of my time looking at German and Irish family connections. I looked through your profile and "Tidcombe, Wiltshire" is a location that seems very familiar from my researching the Whitebread family. For example James (Whitebread-102).

You are most welcome. I too am only a distant relative by marriage, but my husband remembers well the Stanitski family farm of his grandson, Cliff, at Loxton, where he spent much tome as a child, and was grateful to find so much info about Anton/Anthony in the newspaper. His mother was a cousin of Cliff's wife, Dot.

As I am trcingbergens, i wish to learn more on her. cn you tell me anything? mike at [email address removed]
posted by Mike Hornbaker
Hi Mike,

Katharina (Bergen) Driedger is one of 3 duplicate profiles (husband/wife/child) which required merging - her husband Johan Driedger and a daughter Aganetha B Driedger (1761-1801) (which were merged about a month ago).

The birth date of 1738 in lakendorf was part of the original profile Bergen-399 when created by T Pethoud with an Ancestry source. The other profile, Bergen-696, created by Mari-Lyn (Hudson) Harris included no date information, and was only sourced by "529905 Grandma online" (see https://www.grandmaonline.org/GMOL-6b/login.asp) so the date from Bergen-399 was used.

I am not able to check either sources as they are both Subscription only, so I suggest you contact the profile manager, T Pethoud, for further information.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

No Worries, glad to help out.

If you are a profile manager, and you propose the merge, as you did on 2 Aug, 2020,  then no you don't get an email, only the other profile manager does.

You then have to wait for them to approve it, or until a default approval happens after 30 days.

You don't get an email to tell you if this happens, only once the merge has been completed.

PS. You can view the status of any merges you propose under the Menu item "Find-> Pending Merges-> Pending Merges Initiated by me"

Yes, I was not able to solve that mismatch when merging, so I left the death date you appear to have obtained from Ancestry, but also retained the conflicting date/source from the other profile for you to sort out with the other profile manager. Sorry, I can't be of more help. I probably should have put a note in explaining. I was not able to verify either dates, since Ancestry and and source 8 are both subscribed sites I can't access, and when I went to the site for source 9, my searches were not successful. Hi, Christine. My name is Frank Walsh and my Great Grandfather was William Henry Pike of Carbonear, Newfoundland, born 1849 of Captain George Pike and Mary Pittman. The family moved to nearby Harbour Grace, Nfld. Richard (1834-1893) was the result of Captain George's first marriage to Susannah Taylor who died and George subsequently married Mary Pittman. The offspring of this union was my GGF, Captain William Henry Pike, who drowned (along with his crew) in 1878 on his way back from Antigua to Harbour Grace aboard the Schooner Carrie. If I recall correctly, the Pike family originated in Dorset, England
