Biography

James R Munson was born on 8 Mar 1825 in Hebron, Washington, New York, United States, son of John Munson and Amanda (Meeker) Munson.^[1]

He was five years old at the time of the 1830 census, so was most likely the son "age 5 through 9" in his father's household in Hebron.^[2] Likewise, he would have been the son "age 15 through 19" in his father's household in the 1840 census of Hebron.^[3]

He married Eliza A Brown before 1850, probably in 1847. They were enumerated in the 1850 census of Hebron with their one-year-old daughter Amanda. James listed his occupation as "mason". Though we know little of Eliza, she indicated that she was born in New York.^[4]

There is a John Brown living just next door, who could be an older brother (about 15 years older), but who was born in Ireland.^[5]

By the time of the 1855 New York state census, they were a family of six. James was still working as a Mason.^[6] In 1860, the family had grown to eight.^[7]

In June of 1863, James registered for the Civil War draft in Washington county, New York. He does not appear to have served, however.^[8]

The 1865 state census showed that James was still working as a mason in Hebron, and owned his own land. Though there were seven children listed in the household, Eliza indicated that she had borne nine.^[9]

James died after 1878,^[1] but before 1880, in Washington county, New York. (see research notes)

The Munson Record lists nine children. We know of ten from the census data, but Eliza's response in the 1865 state census indicates that there were two more that have not been recorded.

Research Notes

• The Munson Record gives his birth date, his residence (Hebron), and lists nine children. It states that he was living in 1878. It does not name his wife. Fortunately, we get that from other, more reliable, sources. He was enumerated in the state census of 1875,^[10] and Eliza indicates that she was widowed in the 1880 census,^[11] which narrows his probable death date to just a few years.

• Sylvia, Lettie and JR were not enumerated with their mother on the 1880 census.
• James J and Sylvia were not on the 1875 state census. That, plus the birth of the youngest child, also called James, strongly suggest that they had died before 1872.
