Biography

Daniel Munson was born on 27 Jan 1809 in Hebron, Washington, New York, United States,^[1] son of John Munson and Sally (Darrow) Munson.

He was a year old when his father was enumerated in Hebron, New York in the 1810 census, so was likely one of the three "white males under 10" in the household.^[2] Likewise, he would have been the "white male age 10-15" in his father's household in 1820.^[3]

It is unclear where he was living between 1820 and 1840, but he was in Lorain County, Ohio when he married, on 13 December 1841, a woman called variously "Ruby," "Rhobbie," "Rhoba," or "Rebe" Cooper. She was the daughter of Reuben Cooper and Hannah Dailey.^[4]

In 1850, they were living on a farm in Avon, Lorain, Ohio, with their three eldest children and Ruby's half-sister Elizabeth Wetmore.^[5] The value of the farm was $3500, and their farm schedule shows they had 80 acres of improved land and 65 acres of unimproved. They also owned two horses, two milk cows, three head of other cattle, and two hogs. Their farm had produced 50 bushels of wheat, 250 bushels of rye, and 900 bushels of corn that year.^[6]

Ten years later, he had moved to Oregon City, Holt, Missouri, where he worked as a cooper. The family included five children.^[7]

In August of 1861, Daniel volunteered to serve as a Private in the 13th Missouri Infantry.^[8] Two months later, he transferred with his company to the 25th Missouri Infantry. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh and subsequent Siege of Corinth, Mississippi. There, he was discharged in August 1862 due to what was most probably dysentery.^[9] He returned to Missouri where, in February of 1864, he applied for a disability pension.^[10]

In 1870, he was farming in North Point, Lewis Township, Holt, Missouri. His sons Reuben and William were there, helping on the farm.^[11]

He was enumerated in the Missouri state census of 1876 in Township 59 of Holt county (south of the city of Oregon), but the page entry has faded to the point of illegibility.^[12]

Daniel died on 15 Jan 1880 in Holt, Missouri aged 70. He is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon, Missouri.^[1]
