Biography

James McQuown was born Sept. 24, 1784 in Washington Co., Pennsylvania. He was the son of Thomas McQuown and Margaret (Sillik) Galloway.

James' father, Thomas, died when he was 10 years old. He learned the carpenter and cabinet maker trade. He studied surveying and James was an early settler of Donegal Twp., Washington Co., PA.

He married Sarah McGaw on Sept. 29, 1805. She was born in 1782.

They had 10 children:

in 1840 was county surveyor. His later years were spent farming.

He was a member of the Associated Reformed Church and the Presbyterian Church.

He bought a farm from William Hawkins in West Alexander Twp.

Sarah (McGaw) McQuown died in 1858, aged 76 years. She was buried in North Liberty Cemetery, West Alexander Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania.

James died in 1864 aged 80. He was buried with his wife.
