David McAdie was born in 1793 to William McAdie and Jannet Campbell [1].

Research notes

  • David was probably related to Robert McAdie who is recorded on the 1841 census as living at South Dunn, in Watten. The exact connection between these two men is to be confirmed.
(Likely siblings, given a witness to son William's baptism was a George in Toftingall, another sibling. Henderson-2297)
  • David (or wife Elizabeth) was also probably related to John McAdie, who is also recorded as living in Dunn on the 1841 Scotland Census.
  • Did David and Elspate / Elizabeth move to Wick ?
Baptism in Wick of a son George in 1825 describes his father David as a merchant
  • And thence to Canada?
A family in the 1851 census in Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario, "fits", David, Elizabeth, Ann, William and George. BUT David is described as a carpenter, son George as a merchant.
A MacAdie tree[6] consulted by me Lorna in the Dunbeath Heritage Centre back in the mid 1990s has David & Elizabeth annotated "America", children shown, no dates, George, William, Ann; David given as son of William;
Naming pattern of children indicate Elizabeth might be the dtr of a George and Ann. A George and Anne (TATE) have a dtr Elspate who was indeed born at the right time to fit the Elizabeth with David in the 1851/2 Ontario census
  • David and family have not yet been identified in the 1841/2 census records of either Scotland or Canada.
