He enlisted for service in the Australian Imperial Force in World War I on 4 October 1916. At the time he was 23, a sign writer, and living at 247 Graham Street Port Melbourne. Service Number - 14284. He embarked, in Melbourne, on the troop ship, HMAT Clan MacGillivray on 10 May 1917. He was a Driver with the 4th Australian Divisional Train in France and England. He returned to Australia on 22 November 1919 and was discharged on 16 February 1920. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Harold Matters is an Anzac who served in World War One.
He married Lilian Ada Groves, third daughter of William and Isabel Groves, of Kensington, on 1 March 1924 at the Graham Street Methodist Church, Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[4][5]
He died, aged 84, on 2 November 1977 at Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia. Probate was granted on 21 December 1977.
