Biography

Flag of Gloucestershire (adopted 2008)
Joseph Matters was born in Gloucestershire, England.

Joseph Wallace Matters was born on 17 March 1845 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom, and baptised on 13 April 1845 at St Philip and St Jacob church, Bristol. He was the son of Joseph Matters and Elizabeth Baker, who were living at Old Market Street, Bristol. [1] [2]

Sea voyage to Australia [3]
Joseph, aged four, and his brother George, aged two, with their parents, Joseph and Elizabeth, boarded the barque, Brightman, in late August 1849, having travelled by rail and steamer to Gravesend. They set sail on 26 August, but went aground a couple of times before reaching Plymouth Sound on 1 September. The ship was put into dock at Devonport and finally set sail for Australia on 17 September.

Joseph senior writes in his diary that Betsy was sick, very sick or even dreadfully sick, as well as a lot of the other passengers, on the early part of the voyage, with "the vessel rolling about a great deal". Their son, "a fine boy", Brightman Franklin Matters was born on 1 November 1849 at Latitude 38 South, Longitude 51' 53" East.

The family arrived at the Port of Adelaide on 5 January 1850 and then Point Henry, Geelong on 6 February.

He married Rhoda Pike in 1892 in Victoria, Australia. [4]

He died, aged 77, on 2 March 1923 and was buried on 3 March 1923 at Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery. [5] [6] [7]
