GRAVE UNMARKED FOR 119 YEARS

Descendants of William Malcolm, an early pioneer in the Bute District, recently gathered to lay a headstone on his grave which had remained unmarked for nearly 119 years.
In 1883 William Malcolm purchased a property near Bute which he named Lincolnfields Farm, a name still carried today. Four years later he established the Wiltunga School on the property which remained open until 1945.
An entrepreneurial man, William Malcolm had a deep interest in mining in the Barossa district where he formed a successful gold mining company. He was also interested in ostrich farming and pioneered a farm in the Gawler area in the early 1880’s. His company Malcolm’s Ostrich Farming Company at one time had over 200 birds.
On his death in 1888 William’s mother in law was left to care for his 10 orphaned children. He was buried on Lincolnfields Farm, which is to the best of knowledge the only grave on private property in the District Council of Barunga West district.
The Dennis family became the new owners of Lincolnfields Farm and as with their forebears, Malcolm and Lindley Dennis, the current owners, have continued to maintain the grave site.
Pictured unveiling the headstone are (from left) Malcolm Dennis and representatives of surviving generations - Emily Harvey (great, great, great granddaughter), Jim Malcolm (great grandson) and Tanya Harvey (great, great granddaughter).
