Biography

James Lee Kitchen (Jim) was born in San Diego, California on 16 January 1935 to Frances Helen Mead and Lucien Howard Kitchen. He was the middle child of five children. In May of 1940 his mother died at the age of 28 of an infection. This was before the days of antibiotics. The children were then split up in many different directions and put in foster homes for the next three to five years. Lucien, while fighting alcoholism joined AA, met and married Ruth Weeks and added her two kids for a total of nine when united. Alcoholism continued to be a problem. At 15, Jim left and later discovered a cousin (Robert Bush) from Florida. They pooled their money and drove to Orlando, Florida in his cousin’s car. Jim immediately got a job and paid room and board to Bob’s parents Anastasia and Cyrill Bush; part of the Bethel family from Key West and the Bahamas (of which he (Jim) is a part). They were wonderful people. Sadly, his parents have passed as well Bob and his brother William (Bill) Bush. His sister Alice is still living, and he continues to correspond with her frequently. Jim stayed with them for a year then decided to enlist in the US Army. After Basic Training in Ft. Bliss Texas in 1952, he was sent to Okinawa and Japan on duties during the Korean War. He re-enlisted for another three years and was sent to Ft. Bliss, Texas for nine months for Radar Electronics school, then sent to San Francisco to be a part of the Bay area military defense as a Radar and Analog computer repairman. Jim Got out of the Army in 1958 and was hired as an instructor of Integrated Fire Control Systems (early radar and Analog Computer technology to direct the fire of 90 mm and 120 mm guns) as a civilian contractor for the US Army for two years. Following that assignment, he was selected by the company to install, checkout and operate satellite tracking stations in South Africa, Alaska, Hawaii and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California as a contractor. While in South Africa he met and later married his first wife Louisa Christina Hilse. They were married in Tijuana, Mexico. His Mexican marriage license is attached. In 1966 he was sent to Houston, Texas to be a part of the Manned Space effort starting with the Apollo Space program to assist in the development of operational concepts, and was moved to the Flight Control Division to implement these concepts into actual mission operation procedures throughout the Apollo Moon Landing program, Skylab Program and the Shuttle Program. He continued for a total of 23 years in Houston, and then he accepted his final assignment at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida as a manager for the Space Station Information System (SSIS) integration under a Subcontract with Grumman. Jim Retired in 1994, after 40 years in the space business and he and his third wife traveled all over Alaska, all of the Provinces of Canada, all of the lower 48 states and many of the northern states of Mexico in their motor home. They first settled in a remote location along the Salmon River in Idaho and later decided that at their age, they should be nearer family and came back to Texas where there is little snow and less taxes and where most of their kids, grand kids, and Great grand kids live. His Son Michael is Retired Military, daughter Moira (Mish) has retired from Shell Oil Company and Kim is still working.

For the past 30 years he has been very involved in researching and documenting not only his family’s genealogy, but that of his late wife’s South African genealogy for the benefit of his children, grand children and great grand children.

His DNA tests have included the Autosomal, mtDNA Full Sequence, YDNA-111 and Big Y-DNA 500 and 700.

Genealogists associated with the Seven Septs of Laois Project have paid for some of Jim's DNA tests to isolate or separate the origin of the Kitchen name form the county of Laois, Ireland. Even after years of research and YDNA tests including Big Y-500 and 700, the Kitchen name remains part of the Seven Septs of Laois Project. Most research shows that the Kitchen name is English, but the DNA shows that He is Irish. Of the seven Irish surnames of the Seven original Irish names, Kelly seems to be the closest name.

Sources

Historical facts attesting to the viability of the "Seven Septs of Laois" concept were extracted from a book labeled "From Laois to Kerry" written by Michael Christopher Keane. Notation is made of the following names that make up the Seven Septs: Dee, Doran, Dowling, Kelly, Lawlor, Moore and McEvoy.

Hi James,

Just to follow on from your message. The source I used regarding John Patterson is listed on his profile (Patterson-1766). It is kept on Ancestry website so you will need a subscription to access the record. I don't have a copy myself so I cannot share it with you per se. William L Maher

Hello: So sorry to bother you. I uploaded [2] images that are not for this Silas Mead.

There is a Silas D. Mead born 31 January 1819, his portrait along with the Obituary.

I am not able to delete. Can't find a link or online help... I give up! May I ask you to delete this information for me? Or direct me on how to do so.

I find WikiTree not user friendly and after this experience I will not use it again.

Many thanks and SO VERY SORRY for any inconvenience to remove this incorrect information.

Many thanks in advance! Judi Burton

Then click on the radio button that says Remove from Image for each person/profile you had associated with that photo. Save changes. After all the associated profiles have been removed, the photo will eventually disappear from the data base. It may not happen instantly.

Hello

It’s time for a Project check-in!

Scotland Project Leaders check in with you at least once a year to see how you are doing. With the changes happening around the world, we understand that life is hectic right now.

What are you planning to work on for the Scotland Project this year? Are you happy with the team(s) you part of, or would you like to make some changes?

This time round, we’re also looking for feedback on the use of Google Group and Discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way to ensure you receive Project communications? If you would like to join us on Google Group or Discord, let us know in your response.

As part of an annual check-in of the WikiTree US Presidents Project we are asking members if they are planning to continue their contributions to the project. We are establishing a page where everyone can identify the President or Vice President that they wish to manage. Just respond to this message to let me know 1) Are you planning to continue with the Project and 2) do you have a specific President or Vice President that you are interested in.

Jim,

You and I are 4th cousins. You helped me quite a bit when I started ancestry research in 2017. I appreciate your prompt reply to my message and news of your move from Idaho to Texas, where we have many distant cousins. Thanks for the frequent notifications of our new relatives on Ancestry.com. I would like to keep you posted about new discoveries in our shared family tree in the Bahamas. I agree with much of what you said in your discussions with my 5th cousin Peter J. Roberts, yet I must put in a good word for Peter, who has helped all of our many cousins. My father's great-aunt, the late Alecia Ann Roberts Curry is my current relative of interest, because my mother thinks that my sister and I resemble her. Another relative of interest is my father's 3rd cousin, the late Elise Barr Curry, married to Admiral John Henry Newton, Jr., commanding officer at Pearl Harbor. Yet another relative of interest is my father's 3rd cousin, the late Rispah Lowe, tax adjuster in the Out Islands, who married our 4th cousin Isabel Roberts. Their sons Roland Lowe, attorney and Dr. Gregory Lowe live in Nassau. We have a very interesting and talented family, with many engineers, like you and Donald Scott Lowe, father of Google Earth. Best regards to Allison.

Hi James,

I haven’t heard back from you about the break up of the United Kingdom Project. I hope all is well with you. I assume you don’t wish to join any of the country-level projects at present, and will go ahead and remove the United Kingdom badge. If you wish to join England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland in the future, you would be most welcome to do so via the respective G2G sign-up post.

Many thanks for all your contributions,

Susie :-)

Hi James,

We realise the time has come to dissolve the UK Project in favour of the individual country projects of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

We are checking in with all UK badge holders to find out which country project(s) you would like to be in so you can collaborate with other members, have the opportunity to select which team(s) you would like to join, and so we can ensure you have all the correct badges.

Please respond by PM to let us know which country project(s) you would like to be in. Please don’t assume we know. We are effectively starting from scratch to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

Once you have done this, the Coordinator for Membership in the relevant country project(s) will be in touch to help get you situated.

Many thanks,

Susie

Continued to Peter.

The European union's GDPR just knocked the stilts out from under much of the Wikitree membership. With most of my relatives being removed from the wikitree DNA listings on my profile page, I find that WikiTree is of little or no value to me. It is just another family tree. I do want to thank you Peter for all of the help that you have been to me over the years. I wish that i could understand though, why everyone has to be dictated by the European Union's GDPR.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for the answers to my questions. I am not at all pleased with the answers albeit no fault of your own.

I know hat I am preaching to the choir here Peter, but probably the majority of the WikiTree members have either paid out of pocket, or talked family members into DNA testing at their expense with the understanding that they wont have to babysit their account. My Grand children are either in the Military, college, or married, and either don't have the time for this in their lives for this at this time, or don't have the same passion for this that we do. They may not respond to WikiTree's invitation to join and refill out the membership and DNA form. Accordingly, much of our effort will have gone for nothing.

--- I will continue on another page---

Hello Jim,

Each DNA tester now has to join WikiTree. In the Edit mode of your son's profile, add his e-mail address in the e-mail address field. He will then automatically get an e-mail inviting him to join WikiTree which he needs to accept. He then needs to add his DNA information back and change his privacy setting from Unlisted to "Private with Public Biography and Family Tree." Same for our other living DNA tested relatives. We can thank the European Union's GDPR for this ;-(

I do not understand why my Son (Michael James Kitchen), and my Grandson (Justin Blaine Hilse) have been removed from the Autosomal list on my profile page. I also don't understand why My other Grandson (Anthony James Kitchen) who also tested with FTDNA is not listed here on the Autosomal list on my profile page. Will someone please explain it to me.

Hi James,

I’m Susie the new leader of the England Project. We are contacting all existing members of the project to find out how you are currently involved, and how you would like to be involved moving forward. Please have a look at the England Project page for more information, and then contact either myself or Gillian to let us know what you’d like to do, or if you have any questions. We can then list your interests, help you join the team in the Google group forum for England, and give you any help you might need to get going. If we don’t hear back from you we’ll assume you no longer want to be a part of the England Project at this time.

Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you,
